Anyone here tried to mount any sort of underwater lights on a sailboat? I see them all the time on powerboats but am curious if anyone has figured out a way to mount them on a sailboat?

The reason they're not on sailboats is that they ARE on powerboats!:)

Sailboaters don't back all of their boats into a dock, crammed all together, turn on the underwater lights, crank up the boom boxes, and attract whatever's underwater, so they can go dive in when they've had one too many.:D

I use my depth sounder to find out how deep the water is. :poke:

I can hang a flashlight overboard if I need to.:naughty:

Don't need no more holes in the bottom of my boat.:yeah:

Stu, you're not suggesting there's a difference between sailors and power boaters are you? :troll:

Naw, I'd never do that.

I think the underwater light idea they use is just fine.

My wife tells me she thinks they use them because they need lights from below to illuminate the mirrors they have on the ceilings in their V berths. :D

In an effort to welcome a new potential contributor..., underwater LED lighting is a personal choice(this coming from a conservative). If it appeals to you, by all means try it. I find the units pretty costly and its another hole in the boat. On the other hand, we had lots of fun feeding stergeon(I think) in BVI, of the back of the catamaran, with a suspended led flash light. It kept the girls happy.
Anything that keeps the girls happy and sailing is a plus.

Why do you want them? Here, underwater lights are used often for fishing, but you don't need to mount them permanently. You can get submersible lights of various shapes, sizes, and colors. Green is the preferred color for fishing. D batteries or 12v plug in. Hang it over the side and wait a little while. It does attract the fish.

One I Know...

...installed an underwater LED light in one through hull mount and a camera in another, and it's wired into the Raymarine display. Whatever floats your boat; just another form of entertainment.

I say it's your boat do whatever blows your skirt up! Especially if feeding the fishies at anchor is entertaining for the wife and/or kids.

We were at the Atlantic City boat show a couple of weekends ago, which is mostly a powerboat show (we go for the vendors). One booth had underwater LEDs that only need a small hole for 12v wiring. They also had transom mounted lights. Both were shockingly expensive. I will say their videos of all the tropical fish swimming around the stern looked kinda cool.

The sailboat version of the underwater lights is the lights on the spreaders that shoot up the mast. Of course it is only impressive if your boat has 3 or 4 sets of spreaders.:)

Actually it's so they can look on the bottom for any loose change to pay for the fuel that they aren't going to be able to afford this year!!!

On that note, I hear the cost of wind is tripling! :D
