What causes turnbuckle ends and shackles to twist and distort? I just had occasion to inspect the standing rigging on a new-to-me boat, and all but two of the lower ends showed such distortions. One even had a bend in the swaged end. Is this normal wear or an indication of a problem?

Only time I've bent "T" bolts is when I got in a hurry raising the mast and didn't pay attention to what was going on with them. They will occasionally get caught in the bent position, a trick I use is a plastic cloths pin to hold them in place as the mast is coming up.
I use thin walled PVC pipe (cut 2',3',4') as shroud rollers, they will cause them to hold in a bent position at times as well.
