this Saturday I noticed that the shaft was spinning that goes to the prop and motor. The motor was off. A friend on board said that on some boats the transmission is left in gear so the shaft does not turn, my question is should I leave the transmission in gear? I would think not but figure I’ll ask incase. I have a C30 and a three blade prop on the diesel motor. Thanks CW

What motor and transmission do you have? With the Hurth HBW50 transmission in my C310, the Universal manual says that letting the prop freewheel in neutral is fine. If you wish to lock the prop, then select reverse gear. Never use forward, because that will allow the prop to freewheel in gear which can cause damage. (This instruction should be reversed for an Autoprop since they will rotate in the opposite direction from other props). The debate over whether there is less drag with the prop locked or freewheeling is endless. But with my Autoprop it should be locked to allow the blades to feather.

Place in reverse
Putting the transmission in reverse saves wear on the plates inside the transmission. With a folding prop it holds it in position. Its good practice in my opinion.

Chip Leave it in Reverse when sailing.....that way there is no rotation. (less wear and tear) I do that on my 34 whenever I think about it which isn't often... See you Thursday night....
