• Sailing is all about the Weather.

Big into the exploration of Atlantic Hurricanes since Katrina came uninvited into his world, James (Jim) Gurley (JamesG161) has followed every Tropical Storm birthed in Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean waters since. Being a boater, he knows that we often need more time to prepare than we get from the TV weather folk. Jim relies on the science of storm development to share early warning info with friends and fellow boaters.

Early in 2018, Jim and John Shepard, (JSSailem) started to chat about the weather data available. John asked Jim to help forecast Pacific NW storms, and this morphed into discussions on weather forecasting.

For John, sailing in the PNW is sometimes hit and miss. One day is ugly, then a string of beautiful days but no wind, followed by a series of blue-sky days and 12 knot breezes. Being ready for those great sailing days means you need to look to the Pacific Ocean and what is brewing. John has been into Pacific NW Weather since the 1970’s when his first PNW November storm hit bringing more than 40 days and 40 nights of continual rain.

Together we want to share information, new APPs, safety, and thoughts about letting the weather help you. Identify some of the resources for sailors and help prepare you for your next sailboat outing.

It is far better to go out on the water knowing what to expect in weather terms, than to be out on the water and see dark ominous clouds suddenly appear, unprepared.

Tropical Depression ILEANA sneaks in just before Hurricane JOHN jumps up.

Storms continue to suck Solar Energy out of Equatorial Pacific.

Because of the changing Steering currents this year, these storms are forming on the West Side of the Isthmus of Panama.

Hurricane JOHN will actually combine with ILEANA.

A Hurricane Marriage ?

Well, they will Divorce by the weekend.:(

It is a good thing. As long as my wife does not get wind of this.
I get it!
Speaking of weather, I'm in Scotland right now. We had very good weather when we first got here and it lasted a week, then it went away. Probably to officiate at the Ileana and John wedding.
It is amazing. I live at 44 degrees north latitude and Scotland is above 55 degrees, but while it is colder here in the Summer, it only goes to about 8 deg below zero Fahrenheit in the Winter. Go Gulf Steam.

Speaking of El Niño...
This is the current Pacific Temperature Anomaly, meaning Bluer is colder than normal for this time of year.

If we get a El Niño alert at the end of this week, it will probably be...
el Niñito.
So Keep that "Mummy" suit ready @jssailem ;)

I was told the coldest it got in Scotland was -22 degrees centigrade. I use Fahrenheit at home. Is that you're question or is it going over my head?

- Will (Dragonfly)
That's about the coldest it ever gets. Average Winter lows are about 32* F. due to the Gulf stream. ;)
We're looking forward to the moisture in Southern AZ.

So after a few pints of courage my friend walks over to some women at the end of the bar and says ''Are you two Shhcotishhh''. They looked at him disgustedly and said ''You slob, we're Wales, Wales''. So he asked ''You two whales Shhcotishhh''. That's when I picked him up off the floor.
