Hello All,
First time posting, Just curious on how replacements for traveler parts work? I have a 1976 Newport 17' and the original car has lost the rollers that keep it on the track, I've looked around and purchasing replacements, but it seems like newer cars require me to swap out the traveler track as well.

Any tips on what would be best?

On a 45 year old boat finding exact replacement parts will be difficult at best. But you know that now.

You might be able to find replacement bearings if you know the dimension and the car allows you to change just the bearings. Don't shop in marine stores, they probably won't be there. Try googling for "shop ball bearings"

If you opt for a new traveller system, check out Harken and Garhauer. The newer systems are far superior with more control and less friction than the really old systems.

@Dzianko Welcome to the forum!
My first sailboat was a 76 Newport 17. Fun boat.
Is this the traveler car you have?

You might consider buying round stock with the correct outside diameter, cut it to the correct length and drill the center holes. Other members may be able to suggest what type of plastic will work best but probably anything with UV protection will probably work. There are many choices on Amazon.

IIRC, I believe that the traveler curves up towards the center? If you do replace you'll want to replace it with a straight traveler. Much easier to adjust.
A new traveler with track and car will probably cost you several hundred dollars. Garhauer Marine is where I would go and their cheapest traveler is about $450.
With the limited length of the traveler, about 30", and my limited sail trim experience at the time, I didn't find replacing it practical. I fixed the car in the center position and left it there.

Does your Newport have a yellow hull?

You must first identify your existing track. Standard 1" T-track, like that shown in Ward's picture would be good news for you. But until you know what it is, you're wasting time. Post a picture after measuring the width across the top, and the depth ..top to bottom. Harken uses proprietary track, Garhauer may sell you a car only... get the smallest one that fits your track. But any brand will work, as long as it fits the track.... Ronstan, Schaeffer, Burton, etc. Just use the track and size filter when perusing the products.
