usually there is a tag on the box that will tell you what to use. Failing that you will need to identify the box your boat has and read the correct manual for it.
There is no one ATF that will work in every box, some boxes actually use oil.
The wrong stuff will affect performance and cause wear parts to not work.

As mentioned on previous post, there is a tag on the gearbox. It will tell you what type of transmission it is. A Yanmar engine of your vintage probably has a Kanzaki tranny and it probably takes straight 30 grade motor oil. Please do check the tag carefully before putting anything in it as you might create problems if using the wrong type.
Don't get opinions. Do read the tag on the transmission and then look up the right lubricant.
If it is ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and the boat is an older model the recommended one may no longer be available and you should check for compatibility. Generally there is no problem in that regard.

On the older boats with Yanmars the transmissions were Kanzaki. Those used the same oil as the engine. I used generic 30w for the eight years before I replaced engine and tranny.
How hot does your Trans case get,
Shaft and stuffing cool, case almost to hot to hold hand on on after 2200 rpm for about 3 hours.

The 2QM30 and 3QM30 with YP-7m and YP-10M transmissions used the same oil as the engine
The 2QM30H and 3QM30H with Kanzaki Hurth transmission (which I have in my 1983 HC37) uses ATF.
