I am having some trouble with my trnsmission not shifting. It works fine most of the time but occassionally, it will not shift out of forward or reverse into neutal. The cable works smoothly, the adjustment seems to be right. When this happens, the cable and lever move, the transmission just doesn't shift. This occurs about once in every ten times I shft. It caused me to hit the dock rather hard this week while backing in. Any ideas?

Shifting Problems

I have a 1979 Catalina 27. My boat's manual describes the general mechanics of how the transmission works, and procedures for adjustments. I sounds a little complicated--the adjustment--but do-able by you. Intermitten problems are hard to diagnose and duplicate at the time of adjustment. Do you have a Catalina 27( with the Atomic 4 Gas engine), as I do? I would certainly look into it as hittin' the dock is embarassing and engine reliability is a must! Good Luck Jim Huhta, Sr.

Shift Lever

Had a problem with my trans. this summer. When I put it into forward it wouldn't always go into gear right away, but as I powered up it would "clunk" into gear...Felt rather stupid when I noticed that the screw holding the shift handle on was a tiny bit loose allowing the handle to hit the pedistal guard and not going all the way forward...Tightened the screw real hard...worked fine since. Probably not your problem though so...never mind!....Guess you are slowing down the rpms enough though are you...before you try to shift? RG.

Boat

I have an Allmand 31 that I just purchased about three weeks ago. Great boat, I like it a lot. It has a Universal 16hp diesel. Actually, R.G. is describing my problem exactly. If I rev up a bit it will "clunk" into gear. I will check the shift lever to see if that might need to be adjusted. Thanks for the advice.
