I have a 1980 Catalina 30 which I bought last year. When I got it the shifter was difficult, but not too hard, by this spring it was so stiff that I could barely move it. I was afraid that I would break off the lever itself. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and if so how was it repaired.

replacement time

I had the same problem 2 years ago. The replacement cable isnt easy to find either. I went to teleflex directly and special ordered the cable. I think it was a 13' red jacket and it isnt the same as the off the rack cables. Your cable is a larger diameter. I tied a long piece of wire to the old one and pulled the old cable out. That way it was easier to pull the new one through.I havnt had any prob since. Good luck

Shift Cable

If you're going to replace the cable invest in the "red jacket supreme" it cost more than the basic cable but is much smoother

Replacing Shift Cable

Just replaced the shift cable on my 81' The "red jacket" cable didn'y fit my shifter (you can buy the new one I have if it fits your shifter). I have a near-floor port cockpit mounted shifter. In mine, they used a much more beefy cable. Don't know the specs off-hand, but they will be stamped into the casing of the cable. You'll need those in order to get a replacement. They specify the length, throw, & type of mount. I had Fisheries Supply Co. in Seattle build mine & would recommend them.

Red Jacket Supreme

I read with interest the woes of those talking about cable replacement. I just self-inflicted a mortal wound to mine on my Capri 26. Seems to be a Teleflex 14 with what I'd guess as a 3" throw. A bit of a beast taking the old one out because of all the wire ties holding the thing in place. it shouldn't be that big of a deal replacing....once I find one. I went to the local West marine -- not much luck. I read that some of you had contacted Teleflex directly? How's that done? Or....does anyone know where I can get one before the sailing season is over. Brad on the Willy T
