Transmission problem

1st of all, let me make it clear that I do not know anything about transmissions. Forward gear would not engage for the 1st 2 or 3 tries. I had it pulled and the mechanic could not find the label with serial # or gear ratio. I called Universal and was told that it is a Hurst (sp) 50-2R with a 2 to 1 ratio. He also said that it is no longer made and does not know if there are parts. I have a 2003 - 310 and the manual for the engine is dated 2001. I tried to read the serial #, but it is on the port side and not much room between the engine and the head bulkhead. I thought I read 2E8507F206. I was told the the E should be a #, but I must have misread some more digits. Anyone have this issue? Anyone know of a replacement transmission or where to get parts for this one? Thanks Eric
I replaced my Hurth 50 with a ZF10 on a Catalina 30. I inch longer, had to secure shift cable to cabin sole by through bolting as bracket would not fit due to extra inch length. Slid prop back and have not had any problems. I am not really what the concern was of the poster who was worried about adding an extra inch beyond their strut.

The shaft length clearance is critical on these gears. The Hurth / ZF manual goes into great detail on checking the clearance and shimming it to spec. The shifter slides back and forth on the shaft, and if the shaft moves too, it won't shift properly or could get stuck in gear, etc. As the bearings and end caps wear, the clearance changes.

The manual goes to great detail into the throw of the shifter. 35 mm min for top position and 30 mm minimum for bottom position on shift leaver. The previous comment was with respect to the prop drive shaft and the strut.

Unless the bearings themselves have worn in 625hrs (a HIGHLY unlikely scenario) my transmission must have been marginal from the get go. The total thickness of the the clutch and intermediate discs and thrust bearings was 0.17mm. (.0067")
The Ontario distributor said they shimmed the forward clutch pack back into spec. with no further details. If the transmission craps out with wear of .17 mm; first off, that's crap, and secondly; all I can do is hope for another 13yrs.
I will recheck the shifter throw again; but nothing was amiss when I disassembled it, and nothing has changed in the look or feel of shifting.
The only positives in this whole scenario are, I discovered a fair amount of wear in the damper plate, and if the transmission hadn't failed; the damper would have in probably another 3-4 yrs (not a positive for the drivetrain however and it gave me an opportunity to replace cooling hoses, broken HX mounting brackets and coolant. Ahh and I did covered that the starter corner motor mount was broken; more likely a result of the severe vibration in these engines than a cause.

Well; launch was Saturday and it was with nervous anticipation that I shifted into forward.
IT WORKED.
Hopefully I will get another 13 yrs/650 engine hours out of this one

I had a Z10 installed. Was longer, but it fit, moving the shaft aft a little. Took a 3 week trip South to Goodland (just south of Marco Island) in the intercoastal and the tranny worked great.

Glad it worked out and you are satisfied. Will keep the Z10 in mind if/when my Hurth craps out.

My ZF-10 seemed to give out today. Was motoring out of my harbor at about 2000 RPM and heard a noise like maybe transmission had been shifted to neutral. A change in the pitch of the engine noise.

Ran up RPM and got no prop wash out the back. Yikes!!!!

Quick check of the transmission and prop shaft and it wasn't turning. Shut down the motor and in neutral could turn the prop by hand (as expected). But in forward or reverse could also turn the prop by hand (not supposed to be able to). And I can hear clinking of gears inside the transmission.

Sailed it back into the my harbor and all the way to my slip with no problem. The Asst. Harbor Master came over in his little power boat and helped push me back into my slip.

Checked shifter lever for normal ops and everything was good. Shift lever on the starboard side of the transmission was moving normally. With motor running shifted into forward, neutral and reverse. Saw the lever moving but heard no gears engaging or anything like that. No change in engine sound. Don't think anything was moving.

Called a friend and he thinks maybe that Damper Plate has fallen apart and I am hearing the springs rattling around in the bottom of the transmission when I turn it by hand.

This ZF 10 was installed in June 2014. Probably about 600 hours on the engine in that time frame.

Guess I will start trying to take it apart and seeing what I can find out. I am not very mechanically gifted and my normal "maintenance" buddies are both gone for a couple of weeks.

Cheers,
Jim

Very timely and informative article on Hurth/ZF transmission in latest Mainsheet magazine. A very good explanation of why to never sail in forward gear. Neutral freewheels with minimal clutch wear, Reverse locks the clutches and thus no clutch wear. Sailing in Forward will wear the clutches. I was also surprised to learn that I was checking the oil level incorrectly. DO NOT screw the fill plug/stick back in when checking the level. The correct level is on the fill line on the stick when only inserted to the stop, not screwed in. I have a couple of ounces to top off prior to my next outing.

ZF 5 M equals the HBW50 which is used in the M25 and M-25XP. So my question is why are people installing the ZF 10 M ? The ZF10 is equal to the HBW 100 used in the M30, M35, and M40.:confused::confused:

Could PE or anyone detail how to remove and reinstall a transmission? Thanks.
