I have a 1987 Catalina 30 with a Universal 25XP diesel and a Hurth Transmission. The other day when sailing I noticed a ticking sound coming from the transmission. At that time gears were in nuetral. If swithched forward sound was still there but dissapeared when switched to reverse. I also noticed that there was not the usual "clunk" when switching gears. Have not had a chance to check the oil but will do that in the next few days. In the meantime would appreciate if anyone has encountered a similar problem and possible solution. Thanks.........Bob.

Thats normal

When sailing in neutral the water turns your prop, shaft and transmission. Putting the transmission in reverse locks the drive train so that it wont turn. The manual for the Hurth transmission says that you should have the shifter in either reverse or neutral while sailing with the engine off. Do not leave in forward while sailing. That causes the clutch plates to wear prematurely.
