When sailing should I keep my transmission in gear or let the prop rotate? Yanmar with a Kanzaki transmission. Thank you!

Do a search. Many say yes. Many say no. I don't like the thing turning so I do reverse.

It is recommended to put in revers so that it does not rotate at all. This will cause excessive wear on the gears specially if it is not lubricated with a pump.

This has been around a hundred or so times. Yanmar manual says leave it in neutral

It has been around but everyone has a different opinion. Thank you for the Yanmar document it clears it all up. Neutral it is.

Along with the Yanmar service bulletin which has been posted many many times there is an extensive additional discussion on feathering props as a way to eliminate prop / transmission spin that accompanies this subject. Do search the archives and you will read more that you could have imagined possible

The correct proceedure is transmission specific. Look at your tech manual. For example, in Yanmar it is recommended for MOST to leave it in neutral. Some modern units can be in reverse (look at the date of the technical advisory). Some Universals, with specific transmissions, are to be in reverse. When in doubt, contact the engine/tranmission dealer.
