Any input on trailering a 270 (wing keel). I am considering purchasing a 270 for use in Michigan and Florida. I have an F350 Ford Diesel 1 Ton which should handle the boat but what about the law? Thank you kindly. Tim

The old Catalina 27 could be trailered and many were sold with trailers. The thing you have to look out for is the load width limits and height restrictions. Many states have an 8 foot load width limit. If you exceed the limit you have to have a permit, pilot car or both. There are also some special rectrictions on daylight only vs. night towing. Some states restrict certain times of the day, holidays, ect. It sounds like you will have several states to worry about and maybe you will need to do research on each state to be safe. Your pickup sounds like it would handle the load. If you haven't looked into trailers yet, you may want to consider a 5th wheel arangement. This would allow for the load to be distributed a little better and not work the pickup as hard. Brakes are also very important. Try to stay clear of the "surge type of brakes. I burnt up a set of brakes on my C 25 trailer when I had to go down a long steep hill. Good luck and enjoy. Bob Teeter

Too wide . . .

The 27 is too wide to be 'legally' trailered. But I have seen a J24 trailered, so it can be done. The legality is another issue. The maximum trailerable width (beam) is 8'6", and is 8' in some states. Regards, Ted

Trailering

A friend of mine trailers a 320 in Montana! To Flathead Lake in the spring, and back to his home in the fall. A distance of 60 miles each way. The first time we used his old 54 Chevy 3/4 ton (had a 350 under the hood). He has since used a 3/4 ton Ford Diesel. Mike

Re: Trailering

Is the boat for sale or the truck? I'd be interested in either! klomp@jhinet.com

TRAILERING

Trailering a 270 shouldn't be a major problem. We trail our Capri 26 several times a year, including a trip up into Canada. You will need to get Oversize load permits, but they generally cost $20 to $70 per state. Have a friend that trails a C28 also. Good luck.

The boat and trailer are for sale, I'm sure he will not part with the 54 Chevy. The boat is a Cat 320, 1996 I believe. If you are really interested e-mail me, and I'll get you more details. jadedcrew@bainbridge.net Mike
