216 trailer

Tom, I was having the same alignment problem you mentioned. It would take an average 4 attempts to get the centerboard in the tray. I added the trailer guides that clamp onto the frame and have a piece of PVC pipe coming up each side of the boat. I have them spaced so they are just touching the boat. No problems getting the boat centered on the trailer in one pass, now. If you are doubting the size of the winch, I can tell you what else you are doing wrong: You don't have the trailer far enough into the water. If you back it in until water covers the tops of the fenders, the boat will float up to within less than two feet of the winch, and you will have VERY little, light cranking to get it seated. I started out not backing in far enough, and just about wore out my arm trying to winch the boat up on the bunks. Bob

216 Trailer...Guides and Bearing Buddies

I ordered the trailer guides also when I bought my boat. My dealer poo-poo'ed the idea but I knew from experience that the guides would be invaluable. BUT...I promptly wore a notch in my rub rail with the guides. I have hot glued a chunk of rug onto the guides and this seems to take care of the problem. Be aware that it looks like the trailer has Bearing Buddys because there are Bearing Buddy bras on the axles. For a real surprise, remove the bras and you will not see a Bearing Buddy under the bra! Faux Bearing Buddy bras! I retrofitted with a Bearing Buddy knockoff from Wal-Mart for about $15.

thank you for the advise on the trailer guides, Paul and Bob. I have purchased a set and was wondering if you could give me the measurement from the rear of the trailer to the location you mounted the guides. The trailer retailer I bought them from wasn't sure were they should be mounted. Thanks again Tom

Bob Thanks for the info on the trailer guides. What brand trailer did Hunter provide for your H216?

Lamar, The trailer is a Venture brand. It is galvanized, including the axle. It was equipped with rubber capped hubs which I replaced with Bearing Buddies. Bob

May cost you a few bucks.

When I took delivery of the first 216, my only complaint was the trailer. I felt the bunk boards were not long enough. Therefore, I ordered another cross brace with stalks and attachments and placed it just where the trailer frame starts to turn inward toward the tongue. Bought treated lumber to the length needed and carpeted it. You can also use the plastic runners versus the carpet. It solved many problems. First, it centered the boat nicely. Secondly, the bow will not hit the forward portion of the frame thus eliminating that slanted board. Third, it offered better distribution for the hull and the bow sat nice and snug in the roller. The current trailer is ok but if you want to improve everything, then follow my advice.

Crazy Dave: Can you post a picture of what you did? Where did you purchase the additional cross member and hardware? Thanks

No I do not have picture of what I did and as for the parts, you need to go to the trailer manufacture. If it is a Venture trailer, they are located in the Baltimore, MD area.
