Hello. I am looking at a 78 catalina 25 full keel. It has no trailer and I am curious if it can be trailered? Also if I am likely to be able to find a trailer if I need one.
Thank you
Steve

No problem, we used to tow or C27 (boat and trailer weighed in at 9000 lbs). Any of the newer full sized 1/2 tons or similar vehicle with a towing package should have no diffaculty, check with the vehicle manufacturer to ensure you are not exceeding the weight limit. It took us a good hour to raise the mast and launch on the C27, I suspect a C25 would be easier and faster. Almost any boat trailer that is rated for the weight of the boat can be fitted with a keel trough and hull supports.

Good luck

I'm going to kind of tack onto this question, because REALLY any boat this size is trailerable, in limited quantity. I imagine steve0 and I would both like to know this:

how do I know a trailer will work with my boat? I'm looking to pull a C27, he's looking to pull a C25. Weight limits are easy. What about length of the trailer? Distance between supports? Are those variables we need to look at, and if so is there a place we can find those specs?

Wow, that was a mouthful. Thanks in advance!!!

I agree with Big Windy...your problem will be the tow vehicle. You'll need a 3/4 ton truck, those half tons are too light weight, even tho 'rated' for that much weight. Check the gcwr.

When I designed the trailer for our C27 I used the specs provide by the factory for a cradle, basically the height and distance apart for the supports and the keel trough (think of it as a cradle with wheels and a tongue and you'll get the idea). The top of the supports were made adjustable by the addition of screw jacks. Balance is a key player, to far forward or aft on the trailer will have a serious effect on how it tows. You're going to want about a 750 to 1000 lb tongue weight. The attached photo should help answer some of your questions (yes that is a Dodge Dakota with V6 engine towing it, not recomended for any distance, but worked well in town).

Better hope you are not in an accident and at fault that much over your truck's GVWR and GCWR. If so, get out your check book.

Not a problem with my 30

Don't be scared!! It will trailer just fine. I found this triple axle trailer for 800 bucks, no lights or brakes, mounted my cradle on it and it hauls about 8 miles from home to the marina twice a year. Don't worry if you don't have truck, I hired a wrecker to haul mine, they are liscenced for hauling about anything, brakes & lights not needed, they have a big truck and portable lights and insurance for what they are hauling. They even pull it out of the gar and back it back in too. I have hauled it with a 3/4 ton truck the last time we moved it. My 30 is only 10,500 lbs. most power boats are heavier than that. Launching and loading is the problem, I still have to have the marina use the travel lift for this, as we have no long ramps around here, if there is one you need an extendable toung on the trailer and no braces on the back of the cradle, for floating on.
It can be done, but for $150 wrecker hauling each way and 500 in and 500 out, each year is still cheaper than buying a truck. My 3/4 ton van would haul it if the trailer had brakes and lights. The tounge is to short too on the trailer, the bow will hit the van.
