Hello, Does anyone use a trailer to haul and store their boat for the winter? I live about 8 miles from my home port, and I would rather haul the boat home myself and save the yard fees, be able to easier work on it, etc. It seems like the boat-trailer combo would weigh less than 10K, which isn't THAT heavy. I made my cradle back a few year ago with 7" steel channel, so that I could add wheels at some time -- which i did. Much easier to move around with a 1/2. Many boaters at our club get a tow truck company to move the trailers around for about $40-$50 (or what ever is a std towing rate in you part of the world) with the reasoning is that tow trucks can haul the trailers without you haveing to put a licence on the trailer.

We did it for 18 years
We hauled a Sun 27 which weighed 7000 pounds on a 2500 pound trailer. We pulled it out of the lake and transported it at speeds of 40 to 50 mph over paved county roads for 2 to 16 miles each winter. We did this with a Chevy Blazer, a Ford Grenada, a Ford Econoline Van, and a Chevy Astro Van. We would not have attempted travel at highway speeds or for long distances with any of these vehicles but for low speed travel for limited distances, they all worked.

We have trailored our C27 several times to the West Coast for extended cruising holidays. It's really no differant than towing a large travel trailer or fifth wheel. I designed our trailor and had it built locally, we are using a Chev 3500 with a 6.5L turbo diesal engine for a tow vehicle. In our case we are travelling from the prairies through steep mountain passes to the coast, therefore we can't entertain using a lighter vehicle. Over the last few years I have modifyed the trailer to permit launching and recovery without use of a crane or travel-lift. Some points to note on the attached photo, the rudder is a Martin rudder and the ice covered lake in the background.
