I have read that you can take this to a shop that rebuilds engines and ask to have the elbow put in the vat, they have some real nasty cleaners specifically for removing carbon deposits on internal engine parts (such as valves), also I am wondering how something like, "Easy Off" oven cleaner would work on this task?

I have used Carb Cleaner to remove baked on carbon deposits (black death) around a leaking #2 Injector on my Sprinter van. It melted the carbon crud easily, but I had to soak up the black goop with a lot of paper towels.
Before: After:

Removed the injector cleaned and polished the seat and reinstalled with new crush washer. (no more leak)
