I have a 1984 Hunter 34. A previous owner had caulked along the toe rail and deck joint. There is no way for water to drain overboard and I end up getting lots of water , dirt, and even weeds growning in this area. After removing some of the caulking it seems that there is a 1/4" gap between the deck and toe rail in some places. Is this seam meant to be caulked or is there supposed to be drainage between the deck and toe rail?

chaulk needed

chaulk is needed or you will have leaks into the cabin , these boats sit flat at the dock so they dont drain very well, ive seen some hole drilled in the toe rail to allow drainage.

On my 86 H34 there's no way for water to enter

the cabin from the toe rail, caulked or not. If it weren't caulked, crud gets stuck in that gap and it takes ages to wash the deck. Crud just keeps rising when washing the gap with a hose. I've been putting off caulking the gap for nearly twenty years now. Maybe next week. As far as drainage, just find the low spot on the rail and remove a little to deck level. As far as whether there is suppose to be drainage or not, I don't think the factory thought about it.

I can believe that the factory overlooked this problem. They also overlooked drainage from the depression where the jib lead track is mounted too.

And, and, and!

Lots of places. Like the cockpit floor on the port side. They use a mushroom inverted thru-hull. I filled the floor with resin, level to the top of the drain. It really helps with the washing away of swill. Also look in the port locker in the cockpit. This doubles as an ice chest except the drain is built the same way. Lot's of stuff can't drain out. Look in the bottom of the icebox. Under the tinted sump cover. Same thing. A veritable petri dish for new life forms. I corrected that too by using the same method as the cockpit floor fix. What else? OH! Look in the anchor locker. Down at the bottom is the drain. Look Familiar? I cut that out completely for chain storage. The drain is now a hole covered with a midget clam shell. Of course dirt isn't the only problem with the cockpit drains. The screens plug with vegetable matter and the water floods the main cabin. Wish I would have had my camera after Hurricane Louis filled my boat with over a thousand gallons of water when stored on the hard at Antigua. Never complain about an open transom. Wait, I took pictures! But they weren't digital. Gotta find them.
