Well, i did something kind of stupid. I listed my hunter 23 on cragislist for $6000, thinking that was a lot of money for the boat, including the sli pfor the season. Well, I got a call within hours! (I did not expect any response). Now I can't decide what to do..$6000 covers basically every penny ive put into the boat, including buying it and docking it for now 2 seasons, plus about $1000. I went and changed the list price to $7500, but now I can't decide. this summer, I'm living right on the edge of lake ontario, the setup is perfect, but I work full time and I don't think I'd come across the "right boat" befor ethe end of this summer, especially as inexpensive but sail-ready sailboats in the rochester area are tough to find. What do you think??

obvious

haha something just struck my mind. I'm not in any desire to get out of sailing. I've already commited to this year sailing season being worth $1000, as i've already paid for the slip. I dont make anything if I sell..the only reason i would want to is if I want to change sailboats. As far as monohulls go, the H23 is just about perfect for me - fast, single handable, trailerable yet has a deep keel and real ballast bolted to it. and i'm pretty sure the swing keel setup is pretty rare, in fact the h23 is rare, no matter what keel you want. If he decides to hand me a lot more I may need to start thinking, but not until then!

That scam

No..it was a real guy who wants to go sailing this weekend. Someone from Nigeria did try to buy my car a while back...it was way too shady for my liking. Something about paying me 3 times the cost and then i had to pay someone else difference? Kind of like that electronics website with really good prices..but only accepted payments by moneygram or western union.

When I bought my last boat

I researched the previous(prior to the seller) owner and called him to get some detailed info before I made an offer. His wife answerred and asked that I not call back as it was very painfull for him to sell his dream boat. She confessed it was she who made him sell the boat in the first place. Sounds like he should have kept the boat and sold her! Tim R.

Scam?

If one was to carefully follow Brian through this we know how much he wanted, how much he invested into it, what it comes with and and the docking fees. Maybe Brian is scamming this website trying to sell his boat here. IMHO Tony B

Still all about the money

If he thought the boat was worth 6K, and was willing to take the 6K for it, and listed it for 6K, he should sell it for 6K.

Brian, we all love our 23s.

They are a fantastic boat. We can weekend on them with three on board easily, and even do a week away if we don't mind "camping". However, it is just a boat. I paid 2,800 for mine and put another 1,000 into it plus slip fees and much sweat equity and improvements. If someone came along and offered me 6,000 (which is around blue book value, BTW, do you think I would hesitate? Duh! That six grand would buy me a fixer upper 30-35 footer, and I would start over with a new boat. I say go for it, IMHO.

Nice n easy not necessarilly

He hasn't agreed to sell it to the guy and is still the owner and has the right to revise the sale. In fact I just got a call from the PO of my Sol Cat and he turned out to be legit. After giving me the history and how the boat was custom made for racing and the fact that he won a national race with it at Havasu and has pictures and a large trophy, I thought about pulling the ad a remarketing it for more. No guilt here. Frank

Glad not to be the buyer

I must not have this right? Owner posts the boat for sale at a price. Potential buy offers the price. Seller starts playing games. Oh, yeah, I guess I do have it right.

selling is the right thing.

You listed it and you should sell it. First, it is the right thing to do. Second, I really don't think that it is worth more regardless of how quickly you got the offer. Sometimes the first offer is the best. You might be sorry if you don't take it. You may never get that good of an offer again. What an absolutely slimy thing to do. If I were you I would be embarrased to even tell anyone what I was doing.

For someone that.......

For someone that is not trying to sell his boat on here, he sure has listed every feature and option and a photo. This is the same scammer trying to get a free ad, that never took the time to get an avitar or fill out any useful information on his profile. Now that his boat is for sale, he is giving us all the info that he never gave before in his profile. Oh yeah, he says his boat is not for sale....give me a break. Oh, one more thing, someone else took up for him and stated that he is a regular on here so he wouldn't try to get a freebe. Phil ought to pull this post. ITS AN AD. IMNSHO Tony B

Tony B

Tony B, He has posted a lot and this looks like a real intent to have a conversation. I don’t like how he is handling this but it’s his boat and his life. Last time I went boat shopping I ran into this very thing. With one boat I drove two days and spent a night in a hotel while going to look at a boat offered for sale only to discover that the owner was shopping for price information and didn’t intend to sell for a year or two. I don’t think this kind of behavior is honorable but the world is full of people who aren’t very nice or honorable. I got over it and found a better boat anyway. All the best, Robert Gainer

Beacon looks better and better ever day.

Tony B, Gorgeous day and I just got back from Whites Marina in New Hamburg. I worked on both my boat and the company boat this morning and when the first batch of epoxy is cured on the company boat I will lay some more teak deck on her this afternoon. In the mean time I have my swager out and started making new shrouds today and later I will drill and tap a bunch a screws for the storm trysail track on the mast. Good weather and a day off at the same time, what a treat. Beacon looks better and better ever day. The harbor now has more docks in place and the city is replacing a lot of sidewalk and shade trees on Main Street. All the best, Robert Gainer

Wow

I had no idea that this post would cause such a ruckus. I know its a lot of money, and of all people you guys on sailboatowners know its a lot of money, and I would never expect someone here to buy my boat off of me, especially if you've been following me and knowing that I have been learning to sail on this boat, busted the bow railing off in a high-speed dock entry (luckily it was low tide), been out in much more wind than I should have, and I am sure it went through lots before me, too. hardly a pristine boat, but she's been kept after and in no way are her sailing days numbered yet. This was supposed to be a conversation about what goes on when you try to sell a boat, especially one you've come to love, and for me (as most of you know) it is my first boat. I'm still driving (nearing 22 years old) the car that my dad aquired for me at 15..an 86 MR2, exploded engine, rusting away, terrible paint. Today it's pretty nice! I dont want to sell me boat...I thought maybe people here would talk to me about how great the 23 is, how hard a time i'll have finding a comparable boat, who knows. But not accuse me of trying to scam an ad? Pretty crummy ad that starts out with "this is a lot of money for this boat". And as for me suddenly putting a profile up..Chris's post reminded me that I *have* been here a long time, nearly a year now, and I realized I had yet to post a picture, create a profile By the way, I took said buyer for a sail..he doesn't know a thing about sailboats. He recently sunk a very expensive powerboat in lake Ontario, and his girlfriend won't let him buy another fast boat. He wasn't very happy with the amount of work involved in sailing (it was a bit breezy, about 20 knots, we went out with just a reefed main), I impressed myself with how well I managed the boat with passengers, (strangers to boot) aboard, and they all had a great time while I did figure 8's in the bay, never getting more than about 1/2 mile from the dock. Sailed into the slip too! I'm just starting to get to learn this boat..now isn't the time for me to get rid of it. perhaps that time will never come.

Ethics

"I'm just starting to get to learn this boat..now isn't the time for me to get rid of it. perhaps that time will never come." That's fine, but you should have thought that through before listing it and wasting the buyer's time. From an ethical standpoint, the listing price is the offer, and if someone takes you up on it, you are supposed to go through with the sale. If the buyer now doesn't really want it, then you are off the hook with an inexpensive lesson learned.
