TIME TO REPLACE THE CUTLASS BEARING?

I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED IT DURING THE WINTER HAULOUT BUT I DID'NT. I'M NOW GETTING MORE THEN NORMAL VIBRATION AND ADDITIONAL " SOUNDS " WHEN UNDER POWER. SUSPECTING THE CUTLASS BEARING I'VE CHECKED IT AND THERE IS SOME PLAY IN IT. NOT GREAT DEAL, BUT ENOUGH TO CREATE SOME MOVEMENT IN THE SHAFT.AM I CORRECT IN SEEING THIS BEING THE CAUSE? CAN I "NURSE" IT TILL FALL HAUL OUT IN THREE MONTHS? IF SO HOW HARD A JOB IS IT TO DO YOURSELF? ANY SUGGESTION. SHARED EXPERIENCES AND ADVICE IS APPRECIATED.

You Can Probably Wait

Hi Dave:When I purchased my Catalina 27 in April of 99, the surveyor noted that the Cutlass bearing was "gone." However, he allowed that I could sail the rest of the season(thru November) and get it changed over the winter. I did exactly that and I seem to have no special problems because I waited.Good luck,Melody

New Cutlass Bearing.

Hi David:I did not detect any significant engine vibration or unusual noise before or after the bearing was replaced.Good luck,Melody

cutlass Bearing

Last year after I put in the cutlass bearing frose up nad i had the yeard pull the boat and replace it. Cost about $200. I could have done it but did not have the special tools and seeing it done once is great education. Waiting till fall depends on how much you will use it before pull out. Fred
