Time To Move South

The average seasonal temperature in Maine has risen 3 degrees in the last century
I wonder, if you threw out the 1915 Winter as an outlier, what would that do to the statistics?

One of my best childhood Summers was when we sailed to Maine and stayed tied up at Mclure's Warf. Being from Florida, the 10' tides were interesting, seaweed coated ladder most of the climb to the dock. In Florida it's barnacles, not seaweed.
What a beautiful coastline. The maritime culture is the stuff of fantasies for a 14 year old kid.
I plan on putting a lot of miles on Dragonfly's trailer so I can experience that again.

An update: my daughter just informed me that it is -34 degrees F. back home in Littleton, NH.
It was a bit nippy in Puebla Mexico, but we are in Oaxaca today. I'm in a t-shirt.1514908132630530953183.jpg
But... I'm not trying to make anyone jealous:liar:. Just making an observation.

Been cold in Chicago area for the past several weeks. Been looking for a weather window to get my canvas cover on Tally Ho. -2 degrees this morning, but warmed up to about 16 by 1:00. Was at the boat yard around 11:00 to sweep and shovel snow off the deck and cockpit, then got the cover on. Supposed to be warmer tomorrow, but with high winds, rain/sleet mix. Decided to brave the cold and get it done.

Cover through window.JPG

We peaked at a balmy -5F today.

The 'Cyclone Bomb' that came through earlier in the week was mostly a dud in our area. Maybe a half a foot of snow. But the wind forecasts (up to 70kts) had me close the hatches on the boat, in case the cover exploded. But all's well. I took a shot through the truck window(too cold to open it!).

The harbor freezes, then the tide works on it and breaks it up like peanut brittle.

What do those "Lobster" boats do to manage the ice?
We don't have as much ice as I would think but we had a warm fall so maybe the water temps are higher than then they would be with a normal fall.

They fend for themselves and amazingly do pretty well. CG will break up the thicker ice but mostly the ice comes and goes with tide and wind.

The reason some boats stay in all winter(like the two sailboats in the background), is the cost. Some owners can't afford to haul and store.

To many lobstermen, their boat is like an old tractor or truck that's used to make a living.

It has little or no sentimental value and is just a tool. When these guys are done for the day, the last place they want to be, is on the water.

Here in Jersey the weather is also frightful. I keep mine (boat) in the water year round, and use a bubbler/ice breaker. I know a lot of you readers enjoy the winter and snow. I spent 2 years each in Alaska and North Dakota and I hate it. I would leave in a heartbeat, but wife and Grand Kids keep me here.
However I do escape to Key Colony every chance I get.
