Both boats are on the same tack, but the other (faster with its symmetrical spin) is leeward where she has rights under Rule 11 (Same tack, overlapped). Rule 17 (same tack, proper course) MIGHT limit her ability to come up on Sunspot, but her proper course IS hotter than Sunspots (who is sailing almost DDW), and when he gets in the lighter air of the wind shadow, it for sure will be.

And Sunspot needs to keep clear.

When you are sailing DDW wing-on-wing you don't have a lot of tactical options.

In that situation, right then I would call over to the other skipper and say 'If you come any higher I'm going to gibe'. That will keep him away. Done with enough time to allow the other boat to keep clear, throwing the main over puts you on starboard and gives you ROW. Now he's got an issue because now he has to gibe his main and his kite.

I've only raced a few times when I was about 12 and just did what I was told... so I've never really raced before but from your description it sounds like slow motion jousting.

@Jackdaw - I really enjoy the insights you bring to us, not just from a racing standpoint. Thanks for taking the time to write that up.

That's really funny!

Two thoughts:
First that scenario took me about three seconds to analyze, but about three minutes to type in. So it's not as slow as it seemed!

Second, that being said, I always tell my crew that racing happens at jogging speed. Just as long as you keep your head in front of your boat in front of all the action, it's really hard to get surprised by things

Is that during a race??? If so thats a very delicate position to be wing-on-wing with that faster boat to leeward!
It was during a race, I realized I was windward and was doing my best to keep clear. But actually, we were the faster boat, we came from half a mile behind and overtook them right at the finish line.

The video of this race is on the "racing" forum. There was another boat to windward of me (photo from leeward boat earlier in this thread). We were using a boat hook as whisker pole on our code 0, maybe not totally legal. I've got a code 3 on order.
Need crew for the race this Saturday.
The race the Saturday before the Super Bowl is the "Judge Smails" regatta.

Also, came in second in class, but TLE.
Who says you can't sail a B&R rig dead downwind!

Poling out a spin is legal, as long as:
1) The 'pole' is no longer that your J measurement, unless delcared as longer
2) It is attached (like your looks) to the front of your mast

My bigger question would be for the other skipper... if you came up from behind and windward, why did he let you drive over the top of him??? No one racing should ever let someone do that to them in a race without a fight. Inforce your rights as leeward. He should have been able to hold you off, in particular if you are wing-on-wing.

Actually, one crew was holding the boat hook standing by the mast, and another crew was leaning on the boom, being a human "preventer". We were at the finish gate by the time I caught up and he probably didn't want veer off course too much. And these races are generally not very cut throat on tactics.
But this thread is about sailing photos, here's another recent photo (11/16). I saw a power boat taking photos of us and shouted at him to text it to us and he did:

This is my favorite picture of us. A friend took it on our way out to watch fireworks.
