PB blaster or liquid wrench

try one of the above on the threads and let it soak in to avoid putting too much strain on the whole assembly. From the mess the PO created, it's hard to tell if there is a true seacock there or not

OH great this just keeps getting better and better.

Mainsail I think you are absolutly right about the seacock it's probably just a ball valve. What a mess! Should I still try to take the weight off of it by removing the strainer?

Yes!

Yes get any weight you can off that thing you don't even have a backing plate!!! Don't put any more undue stress on it than you absolutely have to..

I dont know if

I would attempt that conversion right at this moment. If it is eather cracked in the threads or leaking between the hull and the thruhull you will be putting a great deal of strain on an already problum area in doing so. I agree with just supporting it for now,,but in reality how well are you going to sleep at night untill this is fixed. I have to agree with need for sooner replacement no mater how thats acomplished either beach it or haul it out. Another thing to think about, what is your your insurance company going to think of you waiting if it does sink?

might be a problem

Good point - it might cause too much strain to try removal unless you can do it very carefully and it comes apart easily.

This is one of those times when you get to

buy some new tools and boat parts and put them to work. Your boat shouldn't leave the dock like that. You can't tell how thick the hull is in that place. With all of the stuff smeared around there is no way to determine if the hull has stress cracks on the edges of the hole. With the mass of the fittings and the long lever, vibration probably stresses the hull constantly while the engine is running.

Yep, my stomach is tied in knots already.

I need to take off work I guess and take it to get hauled. I hope it will make it to the yard. Crap what did I get myself into this time!

Ross are you saying

don't leave the dock without shoring up the strainer? How am I going to get to the boat yard? It's about 15 miles away.

Danger Will Robinson!

I'd be very afraid of trying to take appart that assembly right now. Get hauled asap. If not, have a plan if it starts to leak massively. Underwater patch over intake area. Find alternate source of seawater for your engine intake.

If you plan on motoring I think that supporting that assembly

to minimize vibration will be a smart move. You hear the term metal fatigue used on this site frequently and this is one time when it may be a good example. A little story here. several years ago a home owner I was doing some work for asked me to have a look at a supply pipe for an upstairs bathroom sink. So I looked and decided that turning the water supply for the house off would be prudent. I did and then went back to the offending pipe and turned the valve handle to shut it off and the entire assenbly came away in my hand all the way back into the wall. There was no damage because the supply was shutoff. If that thru hull breaks off you have the whole ocean out there for a supply. Be well prepared. The modern disposable diapers are excellent materials for plugging holes. I once rolled one up and stuffed it into a 3 inch pipe and fill the pipe with water after about 2 minutes it held without leaking. That was a ten foot length of pipe standing on end.
