throttle on meriman pedistal

We have a 1982 Hunter 27 with merriman yacht specialties steering pedistal. To maintain throttle rpms the helmsman must continually push the throttle lever forward. Is this how it is designed or can the throttle arm be tightened on the inside of the pedastal so that the throttle arm will stay in positition at a set rpm? (the admiral does not like having to hold the throttle arm forward continuously while motoring)Just thought I would ask before taking the pedistal apart. Chris

Merriman Throttle

There are a number of ways to add friction to the throttle on the Merriman system. I think the easiest is to buy a wire clamp for a buck and half at Home Depot and clamp it on the throttle cable somewhere in the engine compartment. Make it just tight enough to give you the friction you want. It ain't "marine grade" but it works for me...

Both.

Chris: You may want to try both. First try the tension screw under the compass mount (if you have one). Then you can purchase a J clamp from Morse. It you look in the photo forum and search on 'Throttle Creep' I posted the part number and everything there. The nylon screw under the compass only seemed to barely work. As the cable and housing wear, there is less friction. The J clamp will add the needed friction to keep your throttle in place.

where can I order this clamp?

Steve, found the pics, thanks. Where can I order this clamp from? looks like a simple solution to keep the admiral happy chris

Chris, try the set screw first.

It cost nothing, only requires compass removal and doesn't place a wear point on the cable that WILL lead to eventual failure. Sorry, done being polite. :) If the shaft still moves after cranking down the set screw, back it off and spray some Gumout or similar cleaner into and around the hole and shaft. Get out the lube that is causing the set screw to not do what it's designed to do. The only part of these pedestals that need lube is the chain and lower parts.

most yards should have them.

Chris: You should be able to get these from most yards that do engine work. You may want to contact List Marine is Sausalito, or one of the Yanmar parts dealers in the bay area. I THINK I got mine from Richmond Boat Works which is now KKMI or try Golden State Diesel Marine in Oakland. I have had one of these on my throttle since 1987. The first one was the crusher clamps (you saw that in the photos), then I replaced it with the J clamp. I would not worry about any wear on the cable. You only need to tension the bolt so there is enough friction to hold the throttle in place.
