Thinking about buying

A friend and I are thinking of going in togethor to buy a 1972 Catalina 22. The dealer is asking 4,000, but indicated the owner would probably accept a lower bid. The boat seems in fair shape. She's floating in the water, anyhow. The interior needs work. There is mildew and most of the wood needs replacement of refinishing. There are two complete sets of sails which seemed to be in fair condition as well, though there was some mildew there as well. It has an 6HP outboard with two 6gal tanks, though we didn't ask her to start it up on our intial visit. There also is a large scrape down the starboard side due to some collision no doubt. The lines and stays seemed in good shape with little rust in the pulleys. It also has cockpit awnings. Is this a good purchase? I have some experince sailing 15' Mercuries in Connecticut, and my friend has none. Should we even be considering a boat purchase. Right now, we're thinking it would be fun to fix her up and learn to sail her, then use her for inter-island sailing. Any advice about further things we should investigate or other concerns of boat ownership we may not have considered would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Chance

Ive been there too

I know what youre going through! Check on the price of teak replacement! they make most replacement parts in plastic at 1/2 the cost of teak. Check for leaks inside wear the bowspirit and other bolts go through. If you see water stains, beware! Check the keel pin and cable! The cable on mine snapped the first time out! Check the rigging for frays. they are fun boats!

Too much

$4k is too much for a 1972 C22 which needs work. I bought ny 1986 C22 for $5,700 and that included a new 8hp Honda outboard worth about $1,500 by itself. This site lists C22s for sale. They are plentiful. My buddy bought a decent 1973 C22 for $2,000. It's a fun boat but I suggest you keep looking.

They say you can't run and hide, but try!

Even with the cost of hauling a boat to the islands, that is way too much for that boat. Free would be about right but that might still might be too much. Find a boat that you can use right away without endless repair. Insist on a demo sail and have the owner/broker use all sails and systems. If they won't, then walk. Sailing is way too much fun to have it ruined by trying to make poop float. Ray

'72 Catalina 22...forget it!

That price of 4K is ridiculous for that old of a Cat 22 in that condition. Where do you live? In the DC, Annapolis, Baltimore area, that boat would maybe be sold for $1,500. I would say don't buy it at any price with the conditions you describe. I sold my Cat 22 ('79)ten years ago for $3100 and it was in suberb shape with a new motor and three sails. At the time it was only 15 years old. Good luck.

Sounds like way too much to me...especially with all that work. Check the owner's web site and see what they have to say: http://www.catalina22.org/

That's a lot!

At the very least have a survey done. I paid a lot less than that for my Capri 25, she's 10 years newer and came with the slip for the season. Consider that a brand new 22 will go for around $18K.

pricey

way steep! my 78 H25 cost $2500 in similar or better condition with a 1996 johnson 9.9 that was like new. Too bad you missed my selling her, she still went for less than $4000 in immaculate condition.

Paid just over 800 for my 72

from a donate your car and boat place, sounds like it was in similiar condition as the one your speaking of. But then, it was what I was lookin for. something to restore without alot of down. Most expensive thing was the new main. it was alot of fun redoing, but now way would I have paid what that askin price is..
