A friend and I are thinking of going in togethor to buy a 1972 Catalina 22. The dealer is asking 4,000, but indicated the owner would probably accept a lower bid. The boat seems in fair shape. She's floating in the water, anyhow. The interior needs work. There is mildew and most of the wood needs replacement of refinishing. There are two complete sets of sails which seemed to be in fair condition as well, though there was some mildew there as well. It has an 6HP outboard with two 6gal tanks, though we didn't ask her to start it up on our intial visit. There also is a large scrape down the starboard side due to some collision no doubt. The lines and stays seemed in good shape with little rust in the pulleys. It also has cockpit awnings. Is this a good purchase? I have some experince sailing 15' Mercuries in Connecticut, and my friend has none. Should we even be considering a boat purchase. Right now, we're thinking it would be fun to fix her up and learn to sail her, then use her for inter-island sailing. Any advice about further things we should investigate or other concerns of boat ownership we may not have considered would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.Chance
