One of many aspects that have always appealed to us about our cruising grounds here in the Pacific Northwest is relative safety. Almost never a report of piracy. Other crime is at a minimum, and we always feel safe cruising out in the remote areas of Washington and British Columbia. Is all that changing? Canadian authorities have just reported a sixth case of a severed foot washing up on beaches in British Columbia smack in the middle of our favorite cruising grounds(Please see attached link.) No one seems to know what's causing this--an Orca Whale, a strange series of accidents, or the latest incarnation of Jack the Ripper. Maybe like Joshua Slocum, we'll need to start spreading carpet tacks on deck at night. Anyone know anything more about this? What's the buzz in Canada about it? Gary Wyngarden S/V Raven N52

Beachcombing

It certainly takes beachcombing to a new level. For the record 5 were right feet - 1 left, all found in running shoes, 1 female - the balance thought to be male. The latest theory is that these are individuals lost at sea and when the bodies decompose the feet break loose and the running shoes float them to the surface. This does not explain why 5 are right feet but it is a possibility. There have been planes gone down, tugs gone down and other accidents where the bodies were not recovered that may be the source.

Left Feet

How odd! Down here in California they are usually always left feet clad in Bowling Shoes.

First off...... let's all get started on the right foot

No longer can be considered as the Texas two step. Maybe it's the Texas 10 step myth.

This is the fist I have heard of this... Not having broadcast television nor into reading any papers...Talk radio is about the only news source I listen too these days...seems to be a better mix of whats really happening in both camps...However lacking quite a bit on local going ons.. I dont think there is a "Jack the ripper" type out there though and wont loose any sleep about being attacked in our shared waters... Very strange none the less...Seems odd to me a foot would separate from the skeleton by itself but who knows...were they all found in tennis shoes? If they do find evidence of foul play ...nothing says the crimes had to be committed at sea...only dumped apparently there..

It's a prankster at work.

Turns out they are not human, but in fact some decomposed animal feet that had been stuffed into shoes. At least that what a reputable Toronto radio station just reported. This was confirmed, according to the report, by a Vancouver Island body expert.

I've never seen...

I've never seen an orca wearing a tennis shoe, but they MAY still be responsible. I've never really trusted them completely

I'm betting on Bigfoot......

No myth here. Someone has finally really pissed off the mighty Sasquatch in the great Northwest and he is getting even for all the people who have been perpetuating the Bigfoot Hoax for 40 years! Seriuosly, I was up in BC this winter skiing when they found a "foot in shoe". Gotta be some real sicko. Bob

A prankster

I almost hate to admit this after all these years... When I was much younger, back in the 1970's I was going to take a sailing trip to Mexico and thought how funny it would be to release a "man overboard". I went to a thrift store and purchased one of those styrofoam heads that women used to use to store their wigs upon. I also bought a wig and a big floppy orange hat. I painted the face with a happy smile and then tied a line with a weight around the neck so that it would bob nicely heads-up. The wig and hat were securely fastened to "the head". I set "the head" loose about 25 miles offshore in relatively flat seas somewhere around Ensanada. As we sailed away from "the head" we could see the bright orange hat for what seemed like 2-3 miles away. My deranged friends and I laughed all the way to Cabo wondering how many people "rescued" the head and just exactly what they were thinking when they did. I guess everything is a joke when you are 25 years old!

get your facts correct.;) It was only the latest one this week that was a prank. The rest were real. As to what's going on??? Who knows yet. From the Globe & Mail Newspaper online "There are roughly 2,400 missing persons cases in B.C. and there is a strong likelihood the feet can be traced to somewhere in the province, an expert in ocean currents said yesterday" http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080618.wfoot0618/BNStory/National

Hey Scott - I trust 680 all news radio when out sailing.

Gary asked for the buzz in Canada - and I relayed what I heard on AM radio while out on the lake this afternoon. Even CTV news tonight announced that the BC "forensic whatever" said it was a hoax. We used to see this sort of thing around Pointe au Baril after an Albacore regatta in the old days (what memories eh?). Never mind - you had to be there and spend a couple of nights with the rest of the attendees. Ten up - ten down.

Talk about "one foot-itis". Hope it's not a Sadanic ritual of some kind

DNA testing on first three

My father was a detective inspector in a large police force in Eastern Canada. After he retired we spent many hours together talking about many things while operating small boats on the East Coast We talked about many things including some of the murder cases he worked. If I had to describe his religious beliefs, I would call him agnostic. Likely developed over three decades of dealing with violent death. I do not know for sure whether he believed in god or not. However, I am almost certain that he believed that evil existed in this world. My guess is that if he were alive today, he would likely say, it is the work of a serial killer that is taking trophies and leaving them to be found. I think you can be certain that it is not pirates, sharks, orca or salmon eating humans and leaving their right feet untouched. The police have received DNA tests back on the first three discoveries. They are waiting for the results of the fourth and fifth discoveries. The sixth was a cruel hoax. I imagine the Police in that area are very worried. Chris
