Very nice WillSnow. I don't think there are any square corners or flat surfaces in any of these boats. That's the nature of working with fiberglass panels.

Will snow,

Is the door in your 26d? The front of mine has a much deeper "flotation well." So deep I have been tempted to take out the flotation and have space for my anchor. I'll get a picture to post this weekend for comparison.

I was thinking the same thing about using that space

Yeah - I've noticed that big flotation compartment on the S's and even some other D's. Mine is an early model - 1988 - so it must've been added shortly after? I wonder if you could take out the flotation, put in a waterproof hatch on the deck and have an anchor well?

I opened up the front ...

Since I also made the V-berth larger I have the area at the foot of the bed but I just stuff different items up there depending on what works at the time. Will are you going to make it easy to remove the door and frame in case you need to access the area at the bow?

Today I single handed right from mast step to setting anchor. And now I am going to close my eyes and drift away to sleep with the gentle rocking on the hook.

One of the best days of this summer for me. I love this boat!

Yep. The panel below the door is easily removable. So with it out and the door open, I've got a 16"wide x 21"high access hole where I can lay flat and get to the bow hardware. The rest of this "wall" is semi-permanent, but could still come out if I ever really needed to.
Today I made it this far:

Ok, here is the picture of the v berth of my 1995 26d. Maybe it's the angle but the well looks huge compared to the pictures of others boats. I really want this space back even more than that under the cockpit.

Sumner, thanks for the link and pics. I'm probably going to put in an access panel as well

Please excuse the mess. Mostly day sailing this year and I have had some leak problems so nothing is stored below the sole.

That looks like mine too. You really can't gain that space unless you cut a hole in the vertical and made shelves or storage locker. You would of course loose the floatation blocks.

Or you could put a water tight hatch in the deck for an anchor rode. Just be sure to use a water right run down in so you wet rode doesn't drop.

You just can cut it completely out as it will have structural issues.

Hello All,
I just checked to see that I've been lurking here on and off for 4 years and 4 months. I recently sold a 15' Cape Cod Mercury that I had completely restored from a terrible state. I also sold a car, a truck, and a couple of outboard motors that I had no real use for at the moment. All that and a timely bonus at my job allowed me to purchase a 1990 Mac 26S. The trailer that it has been on was completely done and the previous owner purchased another used trailer and included it in the deal. While in sound shape, it had some corrosion issues that needed addressing or significant damage would have soon ensued. I have been refurbing the trailer and will fetch the boat from the previous owner's back yard hopefully in another week or so. I'll post pix of the trailer project and what I've learned about that after I get it finished and when I figure out where it should go. I've already learned much from this forum and have gained many ideas we hope to use on our "new" boat, so thanks to all of you from the get-go.

Congratulations danphilgreen! I'm sure you'll love your new boat. I hope you'll get many hours of enjoyment out of her, both sailing and restoring.

All finished! Nice, big cabinet for bulky stuff like blankets and a double-wide sleeping bag we spread over us on really chilly nights. And it adds a warmer feeling to our Owners Cabin, visually. The white fiberglass was feeling like a surgery room...

It's great up there, isn't it?!
Yes!!! I really liked the towns and the people on the peninsula side (where we spent all our time) like Poulsbo, Port Gamble, Port Townsend and of course Friday Harbor is a seriously cool place. Surprised me that those places are not as wet as I thought. I will definitely go back up there.. it would be nice to spend a whole summer (if you can pull that off somehow).

Dan, congrats on the "new" boat, same year as I have. Im a little biased.. but I think the old water ballast small motor sailboats are a great choice. Ive kept mine light, weight generally forward, simple to setup and for still being a good camper, its easy to setup, easy to launch and not a bad sailboat.

Heading to Lake Havasu in about a month where Im looking forward to getting the 26S back out sailing. I put a new jib and furler on it this summer that hasnt been used yet. Lots of little boat projects planned that Im looking forward to (including changing the outboard impeller and bottom paint..ok maybe I will barely enjoy those tasks).

Gents, I regret to have to say that I'll be putting mine up for sale. I probably won't have time to get a proper ad together for a week or two due to business travel. If you know anyone who might be interested please send them my way. The boat is near Farmington, NM.
