Got Wind?

We tried many names. One of my favorites was "Mr. Windy!", but the crew (S.O. and kids gave it a thumbs down. So, hey, you need wind to make the thing a sailboat... "Got Wind?" Somehow that just fit this Lancer 28.

Even Chance

The former name of our Catalina 25 was "Headquarters." The previous owner, Don Head, was a military retiree, so it all made sense. On one of our first sails on the boat, my family was discussing possible names. My son looked up at the mainsail and its number: 5050. "Fifty-fifty:" he mused,"Even Chance."

Goin' Greek

I re-named my boat Artemis - Greek Goddess of the Moon. Artemis was also Goddess of the Hunt, and protector of wild things and wild places. For me, this name incorporates part of the spirit that I see lying at the core of sailing -freedom and the greatest respect for nature.

Throwing My Boat Name in the Hat

My boat name, "PanGia" is a bastardization of the French name for the supercontinent..."Pangeae" which means one world...kinda my own personal philosophy. Anyways, "Pan" stands for world, and "Gia" means deep earth, as in the "deep earth movement" which I also kinda like their philosophies. Don

How about...

I was thinking about naming our new boat "Breakin' Wind", which would apply better to me than the boat. My wife was not amused. On a more serious note, I like the name Swallow. A small swift and fragile looking bird. Kinda like a sailboat wing-on-wing. The wife nixed that idea too.

Connemara

Connemara is named for the beautiful, rugged and desolate coastal region of Western Ireland where my Grandparents were born. They came to this country as penniless teenagers and built a wonderful new life for themselves and their offspring. Connemara is a tribute to them.

'Iwalani

My Macgregor 26X is named "'Iwalani" 'Iwalani is Hawaiian for "Heavenly Seabird" A large, wide-winged sea bird of the tropical seas (wing span up to 6 feet), the 'iwa soars for hours on updrafts and may stay at sea all night or for days. These birds sometimes travel great distances, though generally are non-migratory and stay within 50 miles of their home islands.(unlike me!) As they are incapable of taking off from the surface of the water, they swoop down and pick fish just below the surface or leaping above the water The 'iwa nests in remote areas or islands on bushes or vegetation. Westerners thought of the Frigate Bird as a bad omen; the Tahitians saw it as an embodiment of the war god 'Oro. When we catch a good wind and are swooping along, it does indeed feel heavenly.

Reason I changed to Neon Moon....

My H28 had the following name: "Blew By You" Unfortunatly, the "BY" was on the transom seat and when removed, the boat became "Blew You" Needless to say, she became Neon Moon rather quickly. Regards. Bruce.

Debbie's Diamond

My wife lost her wedding ring. Instead of buying a new one, she agreed to by the boat. So I named it Debbie's Diamond.

ideas

Thanks for all the ideas. My 98 H240 has no name when I bought it in January this year. So far I've thought about "Ina's Beemer" as my wife (Ina)wanted a new BMW, but I bought a boat instead. Also like "Classy" as we are both teachers. What about "Beer Hunter" or "Holiday Hunter"? A friend suggested "The Party Boat" because it has a great cockpit area. Still haven't decided!

comes a time

It's a Neil Young song that kind of sums up life and the boat.

Boat named

When we were choosing a name for our daughter almost eighteen years ago, I wanted it to be something that reflected what my husband did for a living, and would sound good on the stern of a boat. In my mind I figured it would be a lobster boat as that was what my husband did for a living. Instead, it is now almost 18 years later and we have just purchased our first sail boat. A dream come true for my husband. The Marissa Dawn. Maris- of the sea and Dawn- my mothers middle name in honor of my mom who lost her battle with breast cancer. It was and is a perfect name for a beautiful boat.

Knot His

Being a female owner and captain I was tired of any male that happened to be aboard being assumed that "he" was always the captain. My boat's name tells the story in two words who owns and is captain of the vessel.

Reprieve

After suffering through ten surgeries on my back, and other places, I became addicted, well, to everything. During my early days of recovery from addiction I was taught that addicts are granted "only a daily reprieve from active addiction." That was twelve years go. Sailing reminds me to remain grateful. Also, in an old dictionary I found another definition; comfort. Just for today....

Great thread!

Great thread; love these stories! Here's mine: I sort of suddenly came upon my urge to buy a boat, having followed some of the ocean races (Volvo Ocean Race, Around Alone, Clipper, etc.) on the 'Net. I'd always liked sailboats but, hey, I live in El Paso, Texas! No one I know sails! I started looking into it and, sure enough, there was sailing on our "nearby" lake. Funny, I never remembered sailboats there when I was a kid! So, I looked into them more and, last Christmas, bought my first boat--a Mac 26D! So the next question was what to name her.... I thought and thought about it, exactly as you all described then it hit me: I have a radio program called "Audiosyncracy" that plays "idiosyncratic" music ("new age"). I'll call her Windiosyncracy. I mean, isn't it idiosyncratic that a desert rat would own a sailboat? Trouble is, everyone I tell about it says, "You named it after your RADIO SHOW?"
