What's in a name, anyway?

Yes, we changed the name, while we're both a little bit Cherokee "Cherokee Express" wasn't right for us. We felt it important to give our first boat a name that reflected our attitude and feelings towards our new found love for sailing. We had a name changing party, but Neptune wasn't invited. What's the old saying "Two is perfect and three is a crowd!", or something like that. We toyed with a number of different names most of which evolved around our romantic envolvement with the wind and sea. Gina and I finally agreed on "Swept Away" yes, from the early 70"s movie. The name has fit us wonderfully as she "Swept Away" has truly carried us away to many a romantic and exotic port in our beautiful Northwest sailing paradise. Swept Away has lived up to her name and remains a great pride and joy to us. skiperclif

Ms. Toad's Wild Ride

My first memorable roller coaster ride was on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in Disneyland. After taking her out for the first time in somewhat snotty San Francisco Bay weather, Ms. Toad's Wild Ride came to me almost instantly.

Wind's Whimsy

I am new to sailing so it felt like whenever we would be on the water we would be at the wind's whimsy so it seemed lke a perfect name for our first sailboat. The downside is trying to say that name quickly over the radio.

Miss Communication

After of 30 years of marriage, I am still trying to communicate with my wife, especially on the boat. We are slowing making progress, but like trying to teach your wife to drive a 5 speed manual shift car, there is a lot of miscommunication.

Fresh Wind

My previous boat, a 1976 Oday22 was named Answered Prayer (I prayed for that boat for a lot of years before the Lord provided it). I was initially going to name my new boat (1992 Catalina 30) Answered prayer Too because it to came after a lot of years of praying. But that was kinda of long and ackward. While looking for a Bible Concordance to try to get some other ideas my wife ran across a book we read a few years ago written by rev Jim Cymbala called Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire. The book deals with the Holy Spirit working in the hearts and lives of Gods People and His church. It was a great book and we now carry a few copies of on our new boat - Fresh Wind - to give to anyone who might ask about the name. As a side note - god sold our old boat after it was listed on OdayOwners web site for less than 15 minutes. He is an amazing God!!!

DreamWeaver

The boat name seemed only appropriate as my last name is Weaver and have dreamed of boats, and of owning one, since I was a kid. Also, many parts of the song itelf are applicable to sailing. Most importantly, our DreamWeaver has always "gotten us through the night." (capital D and W represent my wife's initials.

Cynical Boat Humor

In 1971, when our son was only 8, he and I were "running Saturday errands" when we saw a 22' Columbia sloop with a 'For Sale' sign in a driveway. We were then a family of skiers and had been saving up for a downpayment on a ski hideaway in New Hampshire. We stopped to look at the boat and bought it on the spot. Since 1971 we have moved up to a 26'Bristol and, finally upon his graduation from college in 1985, a Hunter 34. They were all named CHALET

Naming my baby? "fraid not!

I was actually given this OD22 by someone who'd had it covered in the woods near his house for ten years, and wanted to get get it off the property before the house went up for sale. The boat's pretty filthy, and when I showed a pic of it to one of me friends, he asked if I really intended to fix it up and put it in the ocean. "Yes," I told him. "I plan to have it in the water next May...do you believe it?" "'Fraid not!" he said, looking amazed and bewildered. That's the moment that I knew that this boat would be called "Frayed Knot".

The decision was made for me....

I bought my boat after the season while she was laid up for the winter. Her name, "Biloxi Blues," meant something to her previous owner, as he missed his native city, and was nicely spellout out on her transom. I figured I had all winter to think of a new name. My wife and friends suprised me with a birthday party in the interim, and of course, there were many hats, tshirts, sweatshirts, bags, etc., with the name "Biloxi Blues" embroidered on them. Oh well, I didn't have anything else in mind anyway.

BLEW - By -U

I got my 1974 25 Oday in parts. After lots of cleaning and putting back together, the boat has lots of blue color. My wife suggested Blue-by-u. I changed the spelling to Blew. We raced in out first race on 06/21/03 a night run and got a 3 out of 12 boats.

Jibe Talk'n

It took awhile to come up with a name that we felt would fit the boat. In a conversation one night with some friends we started kicking around different names. By accident we came up with Jibe Talk'n. Could it have been that we are Bee Gee fans. Jive Talking is also our theme song when we weigh anchor. Or in our case leave the mooring ball. Weighing anchor seems more nautical and romantic.

El Berto

A friend always called the both us El and Berto, so when we bought the Cat. 30 in 1984, that was it for a name "El Berto". it can be called the Berto for my husband, or for me, El. It was just a normal thing to do. Bert O. and Elna Gericke

Blue Heaven

My wife and I named our 25CB after a Jimmy Buffett song "Blue Heaven Rendezvous" which is named after a restaurant in Key West called "Blue Heaven". We've eaten there and they have the best Bloody Mary's and breakfast in the world!

Zippity Oday

When my wife and I bought the boat, we were talking about names, and that Oday owners frequently seem to incorporate "Oday" into the name. My daughter suggested "Zippity Oday", sort of like the Disney song, Zippity Doo Dah, Zippity Ay. The name stuck - and we call the dinghy "Doo-dah".

Dulcinea

My wife was very skeptical about getting a sailboat. She is from Flint Michigan and thought that only millionaires have sailboats. I am from Long Island, NY where only fools don't own or have access to a boat. In the ensuing drama of finding a small keeled sailboat that suited my needs I answered an ad in the regional paper for an O'day Mariner (which happened to be moored within 1/2 mile of our house). In gaining my wife's approval for the purchase of the boat I listed the various features of the rig and the projected cost of maintaining her. From her end it was all "blah blah blah" until she asked the name of the boat: Dulcinea Well, my English literature major thought that was great. She asked me if I planned to re-name the boat. I was thinking of "Phalarope" after my fathers Pennant, but I suggested that if she liked Dulcinea that would be fine with me. I hope to get Dulcinea into the water next week for her third season with me at the helm. Sometimes the name makes all the difference. -Scott

Market Price High... thanks to the boat

In early 2000, we were riding high on the booming stock market... especially in tech stocks and Cisco Systems in particular. I decided to reward myself with the purchase of a beautiful C250WB. As it turned out, I sold all of my CSCO stock to buy the boat... right before the tech bubble burst and the stock tanked! Hence the name of my baby...CSCO Kid. CSCO is the stock symbol for Cisco Systems. Andy Anderson C250WB #163 Mill Harbor YC MCCall Idaho, elv.5000' lat.45deg.N

Boat Renaming

When I bought my 1984 O'day 26D late last October, its name was "Swept Away". I understand the meaning, but I had visions of a dustpan and brush, not of being gathered off my feet. Anyway, since I'm playing piano and studying the Classics, I wanted something that loosely combined music and sailing, so "Prelude" was the result. It has 2 meanings, as a short musical form, and as something that precedes something else. We've done quite a few upgrades, which I'd like to submit when I get a decent photo of her. As for the renaming ceremony, I'll probably do it, but I don't know if King Neptune ever makes it up the Delaware River...

"Southern Cross"

Before I bought my Hunter 260, I owned a Hunter 23.5 which was name "Endless Summer". But I always new there was a 260 in my future and her name was always going to be "Island Fever". That was untill I bought her. Then I started to consider several names. Anyway, at a Jimmy Buffet concert in NC, he did the song "Southern Cross". I knew right then that that was the name.

Nimue : The Lady of the Lake

I have always liked obscure, and unique but appropriate names for boats. When I bought my 1966 Pearson Coaster she was in rough shape and I felt that she should have a new name to fit her new life. Nimue (with an oomlot over the e and pronounced Nim'-uh-way) fit all of the above categories. I have never seen it on another boat; I have only met one person who knew the origin of Nimue; and the name is quite appropriate as Nimue was The Lady of the Lake in Arthurian legend. She was the mistress of Merlin, whom she imprisoned with her charms and finally literally imprisoned with her magic. My Nimue is definitely The Lady of the Lake (Superior), she is a charming mistress, and has me imprisioned with her spell.
