You'd better change that NAME

I purchased my Hunter 26.5 complete with a Blue Main Sail Cover and Transome embossed name "Barabra Ann". My wife's name is Emily after a year of sailing the Barbara Ann we began to explore a name change, I found all of the ceremonies and curses if you changed etc. After thoughtful consideration and numerous threats to jump ship by my wife Barbara Ann is no more, I purchased a beautiful Navy "HUNTER" embossed main sail cover from Hunterowners.com and renamed our boat "Mountain Breeze", since we sail a beautiful lake that is surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains

Java

We previously had a H260 named Java and loved it. So when we moved up to the H356 this year we kept the name. Neptune was apeased by the spilling of much champagne on both boats in the de-naming and naming. My wife drinks coffee by the gallon and I make money programming in the language. Chesapeake Rendezvous was a blast!!!!! Jim S/V Java

Knota Care

I bought my new Beneteau 331 on July 1, 2001. Left for a vacation at Lake Tahoe the next morning where I saw a ski boat named Knota Care, and decided to "borrow" the name for my sailboat.

Name: Off Tempo

When I bought my boat I was going through a seperation and divorce and I modified the boat name to reflect my life at the time. The first owner named the boat "Tempo". The second owner modified it to "Change of Tempo". The name of the boat has again been modified by me to "Off Tempo". By modifiying the name it allowed me to preserve the original name within my chosen name, just as the 2nd owner had. This revised name reflected the state of my life at the time and the firm belief that I have always listened to a different drummer. Yamaha 30, 1984, rigged for single handed cruising. I have lived aboard for over 4 years and love it. Brian Lasley Off Tempo 2442 NW Market St., PMB #464 Seattle WA 98107

Lazybones

I changed it from "Satisfaction" BLECHHHH! Just peeled the old name off and applied the new. Same name as my previous boat, which I sold nameless. No pomp, no ceremony...just did it. It's been three years and the Gods haven't gotten pissed yet. Cheers, Bob

Jay Buckley

My family and I collectively decided on naming our used boat "Joie de Vie", which means Joy of Life in French. This is the nick name of my youngest child, so the combination of our future expectations of the boat and the fact that it is named after my youngest child, clinched it for us. I have a 1987 Ericson 28 and have enjoyed it so far. Just wish I had a lot more money to spend on her.

Name Game

All our frinds are power boaters. When we bought our Beneteau, they all asked dumbfounded: " You bought a SAILBOAT?" To which we reply "You Betcha" which is a Minnesota standard reply to any question, as well as the name of our boat..

Name Game

Our previous boat was named Merrythought and we sail with the Merrythought Poodles but we didn't want Merrythought II so this boat is named Merrythought with two paw prints, as in Merrythought Paw Paw.

Somewhere

We named our boat and without any ceremony. The name is "Somewhere". That's where we are, where to find us in the future and where we've been. Not very specific but certainly free.

Water Music

Water Music seems to fit..wife and I are both musicians, and we love the different gurgling and whistling sounds the boat makes through the water. also referencing to GF Handel's "WAter Music Suite"

Slow Flight

My dad and I bought a small sailboat five years ago. Neither of us had been sailors before except that dad was a Navy sailor who was never aboard a ship or boat. He was a crew member on airplanes. Both of us are pilots and we wanted to have an aviation based name for our boat. Dad's first aircraft experience in the Navy was as a crew man on a PBY5-A amphibious patrol plane. Those planes were very important throughout WWII. They were known for their long durations aloft. They were not fast. A couple things people jokingly said about them were: "They take off at ninety, cruise at ninety and land at ninety" and "There is nothing slower than a PBY". The British were known for giving airplanes nicknames back then. They gave the PBYs the nickname of "Catalina". Our boat is a Catalina 22. Dad suggseted the name "Slow Flight" I liked it, so that is what we named our Catalina 22. I had a graphic of a PBY made for the hull and I put a picture of a PBY on our spinnaker. I posted a picture and here are two more addresses to pictures of the spinnaker: http://slowflight.net/upgrades/images/spinnaker-01.jpg http://slowflight.net/upgrades/images/spinnaker-02.jpg

Wu Wei

Finding the name for my current boat was much more difficult than finding the name for my NEXT boat! Since I will live aboard my next sailboat, I easily identified "Possible Reality" as her name...even before I identified the vessel! Now the dilemma; what to name my 1989 Hunter 28? I came up with an eastern philosophy that I read about in High School. Wu-Wei is an Eastern way of thought, in which I believe has several parallels to sailing and the way in which I live my life. "It's important to distinguish WuWei from passivism. WuWei is not pushing, nor just standing there, but harmonizing with your partner(s) in order to dance. This distinction is too easily lost."

Suggested by Song

The boat is an older Aquarius-21, hull # 277. When I purchased her she'd just been repainted and there were no records available at the boatyard of her former name. I was kind of at a loss until I heard the old song "Good Morning StarShine" on the radio one morning. Somehow I associated that song with the name "Aquarius" (don't really know why) but --- hence the name S/V "StarShine". And so I can legally use the marine band FM radio while in Canadian waters (Lake of the Woods, MN, ONT, and MAN)I even registered her with the FCC and bought her a license in that name.

Our "previously sailed" Beneteau 321....

...which we just acquired will be de-named this week, and re-named after the appropriate waiting period to "Reverie". My lovely fiance was lobbying for Mistral, but I've counted at least 3 other Mistral's in my marina alone, so I thought it was a bit overused. We settled on Reverie as it translates to "daydreaming" in French, and the English definition is similar; "the condition of being lost in thought". I think it sums up what time on the boat means to us. One thing I plan to do differently in the denaming ceremony, however, is that my offering to King Neptune will be a full bottle of Pusser's rum. I'm going to save the Moet-Chandon for the re-Christening! Cheers! Tim

Back to the past

When I bought my 1985 Pearson, it had "Windsum" on the sides (original owner) and "Guardia" on the stern (2nd owner). I liked the original name much better, and got rid of the Guardia lettering this spring. Besides, I heard it's bad luck to change the name of a boat.

Just Between Friends

we named our MacGregor 22 "Just Between Friends" because of our partnership with another family. Both families were sailing other boats not suitable for youngsters (we were racing catamarans) and, since we both had new little ones, we decided to partner up and purchase the Mac. The boat did not have a name when we purchased it but we certainly enjoyed the naming activities. That was 14 years ago and we still have the boat. My four kids are growing up learning to sail on the Mac as well as our friend's two kids. Yes, it was getting crowded so my partner purchased Catalina 25. Now we can all sail together again! ~~ Just Between Friends ~~

I named my boat after another boat we had as it expresses us. Shannon, also everyone in Newport RI knows Shannon and the crazy guy that shows up in fog and during wild and windy days.
