For the last six months I have been waiting for this day. The day that I get to work on my outboard and make it pass cooling water. I have planned and executed all my troubleshooting techniques in my head with alternative plans in case something did not work out well.
So, today I get to the marina with all my tools and things I will need to get the cooling water working. The motor is a '95 9.9 outboard made by Yamaha. I cannot take it off and bring it home so all the work needs to be done on the boat as if I was home.
I bring a medium size trash can, 3 mil trash bags, salt away concentrate, hand tools, hoses, and anything else I can think of.
I place the lower unit in the trash can, put those in the trash bag and lower the whole thing into the water. I fill up the trash can with 4.5 gallons of water and about 7.5 ounces of saltaway per the website instructions. Start up the motor and no water stream. That is how I left in 6 months ago. I check all hoses for water flow and it is good. Remove the thermostat and it is salted closed. Poured water in the thermostat housing and it trickles in but it is flowing.
So I start the motor again with the thermostat cover off and nothing, then water started flowing out. Put the cover back on without the thermostat. Do a little backflush with regular clean water and start the motor again. Water is starting to flow.
An hour later I have a great stream of water. But a few time the motor started to bog down and vibrate really bad. I shut her down, remove the trash can and trash bag. Connected the back flush hose to just clean it out one more time and then back into the harbor water to do a test run.
Motor will not start. When it does, it shimmies and starts bounding back and forth. Take the hose apart near the fuel pump and see chunks of salt blocking the water flow. Put it back together and start it again. Same issue.
I think during my work the hour before with the flushing and back flushing, I blew a gasket. which on I don't know but I think water is getting into the cylinder and it is not firing.
Without completely taking the motor apart, is there any way I can find out? Maybe remove the spark plugs and check that way? I am suppose to have a boat inspection this Friday, and Monday the 17th I am heading back overseas for another 6 months.
Thoughts, assistance, professional advice will not be turned away. Even someone you know mechanic wise who will do house calls in the North San Diego County would be accepted.
