I was fortunate enough to be able to retire from actually earning a living when I sold my company to Raritan in 1999. But now, as I approach my 70th birthday, I've decided that it's time to retire my keyboard and mouse from daily "active duty" too! I've been online since before there was an internet as we know it (before that there was CompuServe and Prodigy). 20 years is long enough to spend 2-4 hours a day answering the same questions over and over and over on sometimes as many as a dozen forums and email lists at a time. So I'm not just leaving here, I'm in the process of fading from the net altogether. But not without a lump in my throat...Phil and Bly and rest of the sbo.com "family" have contributed more to my success, both before and after I sold my company, than anyone else...I can never thank them enough! Phil, all ya gotta do is whistle any time you'd like for me come back for a "guest" spot!

So I won't unsubscribe, you'll still be able to find me and and I will answer emails--but not PMs!-- in the unlikely event you should ever have a question that I haven't already answered somewhere among the 16,000 posts to this forum.

Wishing all of you fair--and odorless--winds!

Peggy, you gave me good advice years ago when you still had your company (and you talked me into finding a early copy of Chapman's), so it's my turn to offer some advice back to you on retirement.

I am a Professor Emeritus in education so know a little (reallylittle) on research on retirement. One of the best books is the "Fountain of Age" by Betty Friedan. If you have sleeping problems this book is excellent . But it's conclusions I think are well constructed.

Keep your brain active. Those that live the longest and appear to have the best quality of life tend to be writers, musicians, artist and those in the creative fields. Keeping the brain active seems to be the key even though most medical doctors say exercise. There is also some positive research on staying connected to others, sometimes family but sometimes just others. But that thread of research to me is a bit skimping. More studies needed here.

Betty writes that having enjoyment (she didn't use the word "fun") appears to be important to the brain. She (and I) may be biased as this report is academic at best.

I wish you well. I hope your retirement goes as well as mine has so far. In retirement, you get up having nothing to do and by the end of the day, you've done half of it. Good luck.

Thank you for putting up with all of our crap and all the years of your wit and wisdom.
It's never to late to take Timothy Leary's advice.

"My advice to people today is as follows: if you take the game of life seriously, if you take your nervous system seriously, if you take your sense organs seriously, if you take the energy process seriously, you must turn on, tune in, and drop out."
Timothy Leary

I hope to drop out soon, best of luck.

Wiith the hopeful expectation that this response is not a PM, whatever that is, I want to thank you for your helpful advice replacing the aluminum holding tank with your recomended plastic tank. Washburn's Boatyard in Solomons, MD was able to place an upsized holding tank within the braces under the flooring near the stern of our Hunter Vision 32, out of sight. Better than stock! Thanks for your help!

Thanks, Peggie, for your exceptionally rare degree of common sense in what is an all-too-frequently misunderstood subject. With luck those of us who have learned so much from you will be able to carry on.

And we'll still have your books and archive posts as well! :)
