Irish latitudes more important than attitudes!
The Irish (and the Brits, the Dutch, the Danes, etc.) live between the 50th and 55th latitudes, (think of places like Aleutian islands, Labrador, Prince Rupert or Strait of Magellan) whereas Auckland is about 1,000 NM closer to the equator (think of San Francisco, Chesapeake Bay, Mediterranean, etc.). Global weather patterns are of course not perfectly symmetrical in all directions. Yet, as I always try to keep emphasizing: latitude is the BIG one in predicting average seasonal sailing conditions. Sailors in Ireland and the other North European countries face relatively short sailing seasons with often miserable conditions. Thus, on the relatively few days they get to sail at all many sailors in these higher latitudes prefer sturdy "green water" vessels that can take a licking and shy away from light racers that tend to loose their mast, plus some other bits and pieces, in anything more than a fresh breeze.Have fun!Flying Dutchman
