Team New Zealand or Alingi. Place your bets....

My team OneWorld went down in flames. I am a software engineer so I have other reasons why I wouldn't cheer for Oracle in the finals. Now we are at Race 1 America's Cup and I cant decide who I'd like to see win. Are there any Americans on either boat? Who would you like to see win and why? Ted PS: Dennis C., if you read this. Stay off the water. You are an embarrassment. Stay at what you do best... cruising the drive through lane at McDonalds.

Kiwis vs Kiwis

From what I understand, there is only one Swiss crew on Alinghi clearly outnumbered by the Kiwis on both boats. I guess the choice is between Team NZ or the NZ defectors. I find the whole thing to be far off what these races were ever envisioned although I guess there are sometimes some tech improvements generated. As much as the marketing hype has usurped the true spirit, I can't help myself from wathcing regardless. Don

Dennis C?

Get a clue. Is this the first year you have followed the cup?

Ted, you must have spent too

much time in the drive thru at McDonalds. Dennis C., as you call him, has done more for the America's Cup than you or I. He knows a great deal more about sailing than I will know in a lifetime. I don't remember your name being mentioned in any of the previous campaigns.

Hey I can read history books.

What Dennis did back then was great for the cup and for sailing. I agree. I have been a fan of his for a long time. Even his effort this year was valiant. Had he taken is lumps and gone home last month that would have been respectable. But that last minute protest against OneWorld was a bit over the top. To quote Sailing World. "It was like a batter that struck out and wouldnt leave the batters box". I thought whats next is he going to bite someones ear off! Luff ya. Ted PS: No need to get personal guys. It's just an opinion. Stick to the subject.

Return of Ted

Ted-that's what America sailing needs..the return of the mouth of the south..Ted..as in Ted Turner, Capt. Outrageous! We need his mouth, Bill Koch's bucks, and why hasn't Jobson returned to the team? Wait, stay where you are Gary-otherwise ESPN couldn't tell a bow from a stern

american on crew

I think one of the grinders on Allinghi is american. I hope the swiss win cause then they will have the next cup in Europe, maybe the Med. That would be almost as cool as San Francisco.

Kiwis

Off to a horrible start. Gad! How awful! But still, I am pulling for the Kiwis if only because the other crew is made up of traitorous Kiwis. Treason should not be rewarded. How come Ireland does not and never has had an America's Cup effort? It's an island nation with a population about the same as New Zealand (though perhaps fewer sheep -- I recall the hills of NZ as looking like covered with puss) and just as wealthy these days.

Irish latitudes more important than attitudes!

The Irish (and the Brits, the Dutch, the Danes, etc.) live between the 50th and 55th latitudes, (think of places like Aleutian islands, Labrador, Prince Rupert or Strait of Magellan) whereas Auckland is about 1,000 NM closer to the equator (think of San Francisco, Chesapeake Bay, Mediterranean, etc.). Global weather patterns are of course not perfectly symmetrical in all directions. Yet, as I always try to keep emphasizing: latitude is the BIG one in predicting average seasonal sailing conditions. Sailors in Ireland and the other North European countries face relatively short sailing seasons with often miserable conditions. Thus, on the relatively few days they get to sail at all many sailors in these higher latitudes prefer sturdy "green water" vessels that can take a licking and shy away from light racers that tend to loose their mast, plus some other bits and pieces, in anything more than a fresh breeze. Have fun! Flying Dutchman

Continuously Updated Race Results

For those who can't view the races on TV there is a good site which provides continuous blow-by-blow updated results at http://www.nzherald.co.nz/americascup/

Well, the Kiwis

are certainly off to a bad start. Still, I am pulling for them. The comments about latitude are on the mark. Eighty degrees F in Ireland in July is an unbearable heat wave while the water temperature at the height of summer is about 50F. A lot of racing does go on there but it's not the sort of climate that fosters youngsters sailing ten months of the year and glowing into a Dennis Connor or Russel Couts. The Brits, of course, have made many runs at the cup but their most recent efforts were pretty feeble. Ah well, they used to be big in tennis too.

I think if Alinghi wins it will be Med somewhere

I read that the AC deed says it must be on the open seas . Cool the french riveira....At least the flights to Europe are MUCH cheaper for me than NZ. Therefore I say GO Alinghi (Funny -- A land locked nation winning the America's Cup with Sailors from the other side of the world) Maybe it'll be easier for American's to win it back in the Med

Alingi has two Americans on board. SU 2 NZ 0

One grinder and the sewer man are American on Alinghi. I was pissed. I fell asleep thinking New Zealand was going to even up the match, But Couts pulled it out!! I forgot to tape it. I surfed through the channels today but couldn't find any coverage, not even a mention on Headline news. It was cool to see the Laser and Optimus dingy races going on in the back ground during race 2. They said that 1 in 4 New Zealanders sail. Wow. I have to agree with Andy's post. Where did ESPN get this Gary dude from. He was a wonderful talent for repeating the obvious. Ted.

Three Thoughts

1. I wonder what odds you could have gotten in Vegas 4 years ago on Switzerland winning the AC. 2. Maybe NZ was lucky to have everything go wrong in Race 1 - what if each bust had occurred on a different day? 3. Maybe we should get some money down now on Luxembourg in 4 years.

That Guy is Gary Jobson he the biggest American

promoting the sport of sailing at all levels. He was on Ted Turners America'sCup boat as a tactician that won in 1977. I like that he is calling the AmericaCup on TV, I think he is good. There is a lot of sailors that don't understand a lot of whats going on with the AC cup and races, so he explains it well. There were non-sailors watching TV with me and he made it much easier for them to understand and follow. Damn, they even got into it !!......how many broadcasters on OLN could have done that ! If you know that much, you could just turn off the audio. He has done more for American Sailing than any single individual in the last 30 years (way more than Dennis Conner & Bill Koch!!) He has a link below

The Cup is leaving Kiwi-land

I would much rather see Oracle racing against Team NZ. Since they are not, then I just became a die-hard Alinghi fan. Let's face it - we are snakebit in New Zealand. Maybe we can win it back sailing in the Med, or wherever in the world the Swiss have it. GO ALINGHI!!!!
