You know that floor in the head is slighly slanted and I recall on my friends dad's older Catalina 30 he had a teak floor grate installed to level the flood, and add stability. Does anyone know where to buy one already made for the 30 head? I know that their are kits, but that head floor has a few difficult angles and might be tough to master with the kits available out there. Thanks Bob

I own an 83 Catalina 30 and would also love a teak grate for the head. Would you consider the plastic interlocking grates that you could trim to fit? I've seen the product at West Marine.

No Plastic!

John. Those plastic grates are not strong enough to take anyones weight. The teak grate I saw was just above the floor supported by its own sturdy construction. When you see that the grate can only fit the floor pan area not the entire footprint, the grate would be a 1/2 inch off the top of the floor unless it was cut shorter. I was at West MArine during lunch today and the teak grat kits are more designed more straight construction work rather then angles. Expensive stuff! I know someone out their manufactures them because my friends dad bought one for his 30 many years ago. If anyone reading this knows of a source for a custom teak grate, please chime in and let us know. Thanks Bob

The product I was thinking of is called DriDek by Kendall Products and is sold by West Marine. It is on page 589 of their catalog. I may try it myself. It even comes in colors. My only concern would be how slippery it would become, but I have already slipped on the bare slanted deck in the head so this may be a significant improvement. These are made to take your weight.

Dri-dek

I have Dri-dek on my cockpit floor. It has raised dots to provide non-slip surface and space on the underside to allow water to drain. It is easily cut with a utility knife to irregular shapes and snaps together, it comes in 12" squares. The only draw back is that on sloping surfaces such as the head floor, it will slip. It does this when well heeled in the cockpit. Also, it is not very comfortable on bare feet. For the head, I would go with a teak grate, blocked up to form a level surface. Not a bad idea, I think I will look into this.
