Tacking Problem

When tacking I cannot get an even point from side to side. When on a port tack the point seems reasonable, but when on a starboard tack the point angle falls off 15 to 20 degreesbeyond where the point direction should be. I have new sails, stays all around are tightened properly, the keel and rudder are aligned properly. What other things should I look into?..Also, the traveler is in the same position on either side and this is a constant problem in varing wind speeds and directions, so it is not a wind shift problem.

Instrumentation?

What are you measuring with, the compass or a wind instrument?

Instruments

Instrumentation:Compass for headings and anemoometer for wind speeds.

Angles

Do you recall what the difference in degrees on the compass was from one tack to the other? If its in the neighborhood of 100 degrees or less, you're doing O.K., I would guess. Were there any currents involved? jv

Jib Leads

If its not your instruments then check the jib leads. Make sure they're in the same position Port and Starboard. After that I'd check the mast again.

Back stay adjustment

I have found that tightening the backstay when heading up wind had more of an effect on pointing than I would have anticipated. I bet maybe 3 - 4 degrees on each side. If you don't have a back stay adjuster, and pointing is important to you, I would suggest one.

Answers

Appreciate the responses...Will try to answer the questions raised...I have a split back stay, and yes, use it for mast bend....Jib leads are the same and are adjusted for maximum efficiency...I have even installed inboard tracks to get the best lead location and have ample telltales on the jib and main to insure proper twist on both the jib and main. As for currents....with 25 ft. tides yes, there are currents, but this tacking problem occurs in all phases of winds and currents. As for the 100 degress bit, I can't say the exact angle...I will remeasure next week when we have the boat out...

Rig Tune

Dave, I would bet that your rig is out of tune. Get her tuned by a rigger and it will solve your problem. Proper tension is only part of the story; the mast has to be plumb side to side. A rig tune cost me $100 last year.
