Tacking Etiquette

I've never done it on purpose, but the idea of a roll tack is to use the roll of the boat, in or after the tack to help put a burst of wind in the sail to maintain momentum through the tack.

For dinghy sailing, it can really make a difference.
I can't claim any expertise, but it seems to me, on a small keel boat, the real advantage is that it is just a very coordinated and smoothly executed tack. I'm skeptical that the additional sway of the mast through the air, gives it any significant advantage.

I had a friend we'll call C. He was the worst sailboat driver -ever! He would just sit staring at the front of the boat, probably wondering why the boat didn't go straight. The sails would luff, maybe change sides or fill and take off. He had no idea. He simply didn't have the attention span for sailing. It was so stressful for me. No more outings with him. Over the years we had fewer and fewer guests who were non- sailors. It was just not that much fun for us. One guest, a female, and a strong one at that, ripped the Jabsco head pump handle, plunger and cover plate right off the head. She brought it up to the cockpit and asked if this was the way it was supposed to be. Ugh. We love her but that was her last trip on the boat with us. Another friend, J, used to bring so much food she would fill up our cooler on the Ranger, or the fridge on the Hunter with her provisions. She is a skinny little thing. But she brought food for an army.
I admire Capta for having (Paying) guests. I'm sure it can be challenging. Any charter boat owner and/or crew must deal with a lot of problematic clients. I'm sure it isn't easy.
I took a friend out who stared at the binnacle compass the whole time...regardless of what was happening with the sails.

She never quite “ got it”.

After a few tacks.. if the wind is gentle, give the tiller to one of the guests and take over the jib sheets. I always love watching a newb feel the boat for the first time.
:plus:. On my O 222 and B235 I'd let the guests tack the boat.

But what is it?
I’ve never heard that term
It (a roll tack) is just a tack where you use shifting crew weight to accentuate the heel of the boat in a way that better preserves or increases boat speed.

The advantage to a roll tack is the helm remains neutral and the boat's direction changes because of the roll and the shape of the hull. Since the rudder remains centered it does not slow the boat down as it would if were steering the boat. Highly competitive racers are loathe to move the tiller from the centered position as every movement slows the boat.

And yes, roll tacking takes an agile crew and practice.

Actually, we've been incredibly lucky on Skipping Stone. We've only had what one would consider "difficult" guests twice in 4 years. That is not to say I haven't had some much more than "difficult" passengers over the years on other vessels. lol

Beam reach out until you are half tired. One tack. Beam reach back to harbor. This assumes you have sufficient sea room. One tack isn't too inconvenient for those who simply wish fo a boat ride.

proper etiquette on a fun day of sail. the skipper is in charge. it is his job to teach the crew. you need to teach your friends that they are your crew for the sail. remind them of their childhood delight of playing on a jungle gym. explain that a sailing vessel is even more fun as it is a moving, tilting, bouncing jungle gym. explain that the will have to move around many times during the sail. explain that they will need to help with the lines and you will teach how as the sail develops. as soon as your in clear water tack 4 times so the crew can practice moving around and adjusting lines. show them how a boat beats into the wind. show them how a boat reaches. show them how a runs with the wind. let them experience the different moods of sailing. throw up the spinnaker and get them excited. then while this is going on explain to them that during all this excitement that a picnic os going on simultaneously. pass the pb&j please. teach them to wave at every passing vessel, an old tradition of the sea. teach them that healing is normal and that the need to get their childhood jungle gym skills going like they were 6 again.

people like this
don't want to sit on a bench for an hour , move once and sit on a bench for another hour. they could of done that at home. sailing can be an adventure or sailing can boar you to tears. light up the vessel, light up your friends. they will want to crew for you again. they will bring more buds too for another exciting ride.
keep your crew moving about. keep then trying new things. teach them it takes practice. sail the boat all around to give them more practice.
girls love dancing, teach them that campaiging a vessel is like dancing on a moving dace floor. it's a hoot.
who wants to sit on a bench like they are waiting for a bus. no one !
they are not 'guests' they are 'crew' in training.
no one wants a boring time.
tell them that all mistakes are the captains, not theirs. it's the captains job to teach them, and you will.
if a crew rips the head apart it's the captains fault for not properly teaching them. that's right . i said it.

if you don't get your crew energized and trained up you'll be sailing alone. that's not for me, i hear some like it, i like a vessel sailing well and pushing hard, it takes crew. i have many local crew always wanting to go out with me, for a day or a month.

don't bore your friends, get them rocking. they came to have fun
