my tack has always jumped around when I first start the engine. as soon as the engine runs for a few seconds it would settle down and show the correct RPM's. I noticed yesterday that it didnt ever "settle down" but continued to swing. anyone know what is going on? the engine (uni25) seems to be running just fine. thanks

Check the coil.

Dan: Years ago I had a similar thing happen on a '69 Chevy Nova. If memory serves, the culprit urned out to be a bad connector on the lead that ran to the coil. Alternatively, maybe your tach is on its way out. Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

Tach

Dan Let me guess - you keep your boat plugged into shorepower all the time. The tach (not tack) works off the alternator. If your batteries are "all filled up" from being on shorepower/charger, the alternator is not being required to produce any output, since the batteries are already full. No alternator operation, no tach readings. Either hang a load on your DC system (lights, fridge, etc.) or forget about it. The link pretty much repeats what I've said here, but conifrms that you're not alone. Stu

excuse my Southernese LOL

tack, tach, Im glad you understood what I was talk'n bout! But, no I leave my C30 out on a hook. I was in a marina for the weekend although. I left on Sun and motored home with what I thought was a full charge on both house batteries. When I got on the boat yesterday (Tues) I noticed while opening the thru hulls that water was backed up from the bilge. I turned the bilge switch to manual and nothing. I checked the #1 battery which I had on and it was dead. I switched to #2 battery and it started pumping. Soooooo, I know at least #1 battery needed charging. I thought this strange too, for the #1 battery to be dead after 2 days with nothing pulling on it but the bilge pump. I have only had the boat for 3 mos. so I still dont understand every thing I know about the boat.
