My tachometer works intermittently. My mechanic could not find any defect since it was working then. ? sensor defect.
Any idea?
Thanks,
Viktor

Never been to Thailand, have you? Thanks so much - my tachometer does exactly the same. What is the tranny? Sorry for my limited knowledge!

Sorry Viktor, I assumed everyone knew. Tranny = transmission. On my 3GM30F Yanmar, the tack pick-up is located near the transmission and the connector is only inches away. I suspect the vibration of the engine works it loose over time. Thanks so much - my tachometer does exactly the same. What is the tranny? Sorry for my limited knowledge!

I have a 45 cc and my tach occasionally does the same thing. I have not found any loose connections and my solution is to turn the motor off and restart when it happens and the tack usually works.
Jim, the connection might not be loose but you may have some corrosion in it or at the posts on the tach itself. Take the connection apart, and clean it (contact cleaner) and see what happens. The tach pick-up is from the flywheel, and its an electric pulsion. Seems to me even if the alternator circuit goes in "idle" as you say, the fully charged batteries are still given you 12 V +. Hence I don't understand how it would make a difference to the tach. If your tach works when you restart your engine, then the diagnostic remains an intermittent contact. A ruined tach would not work or would give you a completely false reading (taking in consideration the 50 - 75 RPM difference when compared with an electronic tach).
