My tachometer works intermittently. My mechanic could not find any defect since it was working then. ? sensor defect.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Viktor

Can you specifically describe the defect? Does the needle stay at zero? Does the hourmeter still work?

Our's does the same thing, I suspect a corroded connection somewhere. To busy to look into it right now!!

Mine did that a few years ago. Would work OK then drop to 0 and not work until I started the engine the next time. Eventually found out that the connector (near the tranny) had worked itself a little loose and contact was lost intermittently. Worked both ends of the connector in and out several times and used contact cleaner, let dry then used dielectric grease and reassembled finishing with some tape to prevent getting loose again. Tach has worked flawlessly since and the 5 minutes cleaning has become part of my Spring pre-launch maintenance. Hope your problem is as simple. Good luck

Thanks so much - my tachometer does exactly the same. What is the tranny? Sorry for my limited knowledge!

Best wishes,
Viktor

Same here. Mine was acting up so I cleaned and tightened the connections and it has been working fine.

Sorry Viktor, I assumed everyone knew. Tranny = transmission. On my 3GM30F Yanmar, the tack pick-up is located near the transmission and the connector is only inches away. I suspect the vibration of the engine works it loose over time.

my tacho works fine but my engine hour counter faded and now I can't read it anytime.

I have a 45 cc and my tach occasionally does the same thing. I have not found any loose connections and my solution is to turn the motor off and restart when it happens and the tack usually works. There was some information that this happens when the batteries are fully charged and the alternator circuit goes into "idle".
On another note the digital display hours meter has gone bland and I installed an hours clock in the panel.

Jim, the connection might not be loose but you may have some corrosion in it or at the posts on the tach itself. Take the connection apart, and clean it (contact cleaner) and see what happens. The tach pick-up is from the flywheel, and its an electric pulsion. Seems to me even if the alternator circuit goes in "idle" as you say, the fully charged batteries are still given you 12 V +. Hence I don't understand how it would make a difference to the tach. If your tach works when you restart your engine, then the diagnostic remains an intermittent contact. A ruined tach would not work or would give you a completely false reading (taking in consideration the 50 - 75 RPM difference when compared with an electronic tach).
