My tachometer needle (diesel) swings wildly while the engine is running. Looking at the electrical connections, it apprears that the tach is connected to lugs on the backside of the alternator. Is there someway to determine if the problem is in the actual gauge or in the wiring? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

connections

I would first look for a loose connection somewhere in the wiring harness, especially the ground connections. Have you upgraded the wiring harness or are you still with the 8 pronged plug? That could also be part of your problem. good luck. Tom.

I put a Balmar Regulator in and had the same thing happen. It is a loose bayonet plug. As already mentioned in replies, check for a loose connection.

C 28 Tac problems

I found in one of my owners manuals that there are some "DIP" switches IN the back of the tacometer. these are set to a chart per the engine you have. If you need a copy of the chark e-mail me at KDSSAIL@HOTMAIL.COM Mine were off and the tac only went to 2500 rpms but I was side by side to a second C28 even at full engine speed but the tacs were reading different
