I have a 1987 C30TRBS with an M25 engine. The other day may tach stopped working. Does any know what could cause this to happen and I assume it's electric what is it wired to? Thanks for any advice.

Ron,

Ron, The tach on your M25 is driven by the a/c current from the alternator winding. These tachs fail due to one of the following; 1) corroded wiring int the harness 2) loose connection in the wiring harness 3) loose connection at the alternator 4) a bad alternator 5) a bad tach You might consider pulling the alternator and taking it to AutoZone, or PepBoys and having it tested. If the alternator is the problem most auto-electric shops should be able to rebuild it reasonably. There are many documented problems with the wiring harnesses on the older Catalinas. Definetly clean all the connectors(2 at engine, 2 near the panel). If nothing else helps I would then condem the tach and get a replacement. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Lake Lanier, Ga

Tach Problem - Step by Step

Ron If your batteries were full the tach wouldn't work because the field wire didn't sense it needed to charge. It may be as simple as that, or Pat's got it nailed. Check the connections, and do the wiring harness upgrade if you haven't, since you didn't say. Search on this Forums Archives under wiring harness will get you tons of information, or go visit the C34 website and message board using their search and find features. C36s and C30s all had the same engine, and each website will be of tremendous value to you. try: http://c34.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x?a=search&s=329609511&reqWords=tachometer and the link. Hope you don't have to yank anything out. Change the fluid first, too before doing anything more drastic. Of course there's the shifting lines, too. Stu
