I just bought a 1976 Oday Rhodes 19, centerboard model. It has a tapered mast with halyards running inside the mast and exiting at the foot of the mast through two sheave blocks. I'd like to consider putting in a tabernacle, but I'd have to move the sheave blocks up above the cuddy, which would require cutting a rectangular hole in the mast for the double sheave block. Anyone had any experience with this? I'm worried about weakening the mast.

I'd say that it might be worth taking a ride over to Wareham to visit Cape cod Shipbuilding.... their ZEPHYR SPARS division is one of the approved suppliers for R19 masts for class-racing and they are pretty good at these spars. A phone call first may even get you the advice you seek. (see web site below)
Their 16' Bullseye sailboat has a very similar setup for the halyards as your R19 sounds like it has (internal, led out below deck), and I remember seeing a Bullseye converted to a hinged, on-deck stepped setup, just like you are considering.
Rudy at D&R might have some good ideas as well, but Zephyr will have all the parts and knowledge in stock.
