Hey, Mark

can you back up those charges of daily rule changes? Or is that just some hot air coming out from down under? (Couldn't pass up a chance to end a sentence with four prepositions)

Final results

Final results for the Quick Quiz ending Febraury 23, 2003: My thoughts on the America's Cup are: 45% I wish spring would get here 30% New Zealand will make a comeback but Alinghi will prevail 16% Alinghi will run the table and win 5-0 11% New Zealand can still win

Sure can. Every time there was a race day (way back then)if it was two light they wouldn't race and if it was to heavy they wouldn't race. I reckon they should just go out there and race. Besides the conditions are equal to both teams and if their yacht is not up to it then the last man standing wins. Not only shows up good yachtsman but also fine yacht design and construction. (You know I used the best bait I could and am suprised I haven't hooked a few more than just you Bob.)

Andy: So why is that new in the AC?

Not sure what you mean, but the word "sneaky" no longer seems to be an unusual word with respect to AC. Unless you saw something new, the wings on Alinghi contrasted to the wings on NZ have been on ESPN several times.

they should bring the America's Cup back to basics

and eliminate all the advertising on the sails booms and hulls. Take away all the onboard computers, range finders, radar guns etc. Let them race with the same stuff we have on board....compass, wind instruments, boat speed instrument and a GPS. Institute a "spending cap" The amount of money spent on these boats and crews is obsene!! Reduce the time spent sailing and practising from years down to months. Somebody needs to get a "grip"! The America's Cup racing of today IS NOT in the spirit of the race forefathers. End of rant!!

Not in the spirit?

Hi Mark, How do you know what their spirit was? Been listening to spirits? I'm just guessing it was as ego driven then as now, and they did everything they could to win, just as now. I'm all for spending obscene amounts of money, pushing the boundries of the rules, and using as much equipment as possible. You sound like Steve Martin in "The Jerk". All I need is this compass, that's all I need. And this wind monitor, speed log, GPS, radar, etc. We haven't had GPS for that long. Where would you draw the line? They can only use equipment from the 1998 West Marine catalog? Why not go all the way and suggests they use dugout canoes and they have to weave their own sails from silkworms. I want spectacular wanton unabashed excess. I want billionaires in boats. Namecalling, backstabbing, thieving, traitors to the cause. I'm not going to sit in front of the TV to watch you piddle around in the Long Island Sound.

Contest of Billionaires, always Sneaky

Come on guys, this has never been a race that has been fair, but one that always pushed the $ to the limits, the boats to the limits, and design to the limits. It is NOT matched racing I agree with Jim, so what is new about being sneaky in the AC?

Great picture, Andy. Just one question...

How the hell could Alinghi heel that much and still hold a course and win?!!? ;-)

Youdaman, Ed

It's fascinating to see how far the limits can be pushed in sailing technology - frinstance, the current efforts to set absolute speed records. The problem as I see it is that as it becomes more and more a spectator sport, and thus advertising/TV programming driven, it will become more and more like NASCAR, with close finishes required to keep the viewers coming back, and therefore something akin to a yellow flag when one boat gains too much of a lead to tighten things up and make for a more exciting finish.

OK, in retrospect...

Accepting all of the politics, money, and nationalism, I have decided that what just happened is great for the sport. NZ is no different from any other sport or team that has ever persue'd competitive activity. You can dominate a sport for so long, then, the law of averages kick's in. There are a whole lot of formidable challengers for the America's Cup. The Kiwi's are awesome sailor's no doubt, and, they will surely prove to be exceptional challengers in the future, BUT, this team that just won, was NOT just Kiwi's. 10 of the crew were from other countries including USA, Canada, Germany, SUI etc. Outside of all of the controversy surrounding the politics of the NZ 6 jumping ship, this was great racing. Alinghi proved that they deserved the Cup. You've got to look at the LV Cup challengers to get a look at the next Cup, and, I am very encouraged at the prospects. Oracle will be there again...and that gives me a very warm, fuzzy feeling:) Though I take my hat off to one, Russell Coutts, AND Brad Butterworth (ok, check the spelling)....they are exceptional sailors! Money aside, I still enjoy a good regatta.

Apologies: To Andi, Thanks Tom - Now I see the Point

For some reason I was never able to see Andi's picture. Looking in the wrong place I suppose. Great picture. Just a little variation on the wing keel. Allows one to clean the fish while sailing . . . . Probably lets the boat cut through the water better . . . .etc. Anyhow <big grin> my apologies for my previous response on the subject.
