Has anyone here had to remove the swing keel from a S2 8.0? If you have I could use some direction on the subject.

Thanks for your help on this.

Do yourself a favor. While the board is out put a coat of anti-fouling paint in the slot. Stuff growing on the board and in the slot is the number one cause of jamming...especially if the boat is in salt water (damn barnacles!).

What kind of work are you doing on your keel?

Take a look at this link: http://s2sailor.110mb.com/cbremoval.htm

The setup on the 6.8 looks similar to the 8.0 swing keel setup... at least from a casual exterior inspection of my boat before I bought it.
I'm having the bottom blasted on the 28th and was going to pull the keel and have it done too. Then do the bottom job on it also.

That would make it easy to work on with out having to use the crane for hours at a time.

The link site was down so I will check it out later.

Are you sure it is a "swing" keel? Or is it a verticle rise "daggerboard"? I just removed my S2 6.9 daggerboard and have some good advice for you. Call me at 817-614-4453

It will be interesting to see the condition of the cable. I need to fix my cable with a stop like yours so I don't loose it down the tube. That's going to be a tall ladder to crawl up on the boat with it suspended from the crane!

Take plenty of photos! :)

Shoal draft with swing keels or fin keels for the 8.0s. On the original 8.0 price list it says 'Keel Centerboard' but it's a swinger on mine.

Any photos of the work? I'm always curious about boat projects to pick up tips and info.

When we pulled her out for the winter it was time for a new bottom and to check the swing keel out. It had no damage in that area. Because I couldn’t find any info on the swing keel in the S2 area I decided to take some photos. This is the shoal draft with swing keel. The one shows the pen that has carter rings that hold it in place. The other is the cable connection at the swing keel.

I think it is because of the difference in models. Yours is a C and I have the B model.

I've been having trouble with the 110mb.com web hosting lately, so I moved all of my pages to hostoi.com. You can find the centerboard removal page here now: http://s2sailor.hostoi.com/cbremoval.htm

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I have some pictures of the centerboard rebuild in an S2 6.8 here. We reengineered the centerboard cable attachment.

We broke the cable while sailing in Florida. The attachment point was worn out.
It seems to be working well now.

It looks very good now. Does it work as good as the old setup? Did you have too rebuilt the rusted out area or did you use what was left on the sides?

We have sailed with this set up last year with no problems. I am still thinking of adding some shims to the pivot point because I have some slapping noise when I sail in big waves.

The centerboard appears to be cast iron and I decided not to fill any voids or try to weld it because it would not make any significant performance difference on this boat.

We ended up replacing the cable because it had been pulled into the steel tube that goes from the winch to the cabin floor. That was a fun job.

And to answer your question. We used the metal that was left on the sides and drilled two holes to attach the side plates.
