I AM INTERESTED IN CHANGING FROM A SINGLE BACKSTAY ON MY CATALINA 28 TO A SPLIT BACKSTAY SYSTEM. I SEE SWAGLESS FITTING IN THE CATALOGS BUT I DO NOT KNOW OF ANYONE THAT HAS USED THEM!! ARE THEY GOOD AND RELIABLE TO USE ON THE BACKSTAY?? IF SO THEN I WILL BUILD MY OWN SPLIT SYSTEM. THANKS AHEAD OF TIME DAVE SLEPOY

Sta-Lok fittings

They are expensive, and just as strong as swaged. In many ways they are superior: 1. They can be disassembled for inspection for corrosion. 2. They drain. Swaged fittings trap water, adn can crack from freezing. 3. Re-useable. 4. Field terminated, useful for repairs, emergency or otherwise. jv

Sta-Locks are great!

I have replaced all standing rigging on my 1985 Catalina 27 one year ago, using swages for the top terminals (ordered the wires with one end swaged on) and then cut wires to exact length and terminated with Sta-Locks right on the boat. The process went smoothly and I would do it anytime again. I was also thinking about a split backstay, but I will stay away from it because it would make the cockpit quite uncomfortable, rendering the stern pulpit corners pretty much unusable. Good luck, Hans

quick attach

I changed out my standing rigging almost two years ago prior to the passage to Bermuda. I used predominantly Quick Attach fittings. They are cheaper and much easier to fit than Sta-Loks and I believe them to be just as strong. I ended up using both due to a shortage in supply of the Quick Attach. I would use Quick attach over Sta-Lok again.
