Am I the only guy who can not get a suction cup , cup holder to stick for more than ten minutes.I just bought a new one from west marine and I stuck it to a smooth surface of my Hunter 23. Within ten minutes it fell off. I stuck it back on ten times and it fell off everytime. Is threre a trick to get it to stick on ? Thanks Wally

Maybe clean the surface with alcohol or such to remove years of wax and...

Cleaning the surface is a good idea...but using a small amount of glycerin or spit on the suction cup will help quite a bit too.

Forget about it, a few years back I had a suction cup mesh bag for a centerboard line and had the same problem ended up removing the suction cups and installing snaps
You might want to try velcro or screws cause it sucks when you have a cold one that decides to commit suicide with the drink holder

i've never gotten them to work like they are supposed to. After I spilled a few beverages, I figured out where I could set my drink and know to move it prior to changing tacks. I will make something soon for the new boat though.

Those drink holders are about as smart as a peddal powered wheel chair or a solar powered flashlight. Why not get the ones that clip to your lifeline or something of that nature.

I had these on board for two years before I figured out what they were for. I use them all of the time now. They hang on the life lines in the cockpit.

BTW I work on at a high school with an adaptive campus and we have a kid with a peddal powered wheelchair, works for him.

I know how to make them hold every time. Clean the surface and the suction cup with spit. Stick in place. Drill 1/8 hole through cup into fiberglass. Screw in an 1/8 screw with flat washer. viola!:)
Sorry, had to add some humor because those that laugh...last.
And a way of telling you..yep, those things don't work.

The problem is likely that your gelcoat is too oxidized. If you compound and polish it properly, the suction cups will work better especially if used with some spit. Kind of a big job to get a cup holder but if it is oxidized then you should be doing this anyway.

The holding surface cannot be porous so clean the area real good and spit works as a great sealant. A good trick is to get horizontal support so sit it on top of the cockpit seat and stick it to the back.

Every trick

I have tried everything suggested, and I gave up on anything using a suction cup years ago. They just don't work. If you get one to seemingly hold, it will hold till you put a full can in it, then not only does it let go, it spills the contents all over.

I use two suctions cup drink holders on top of the instrument pod. They're very handy and work well, but mounting is the key. I double-stick taped a small piece of wood to the desired spot, placed the cup holder over it, then put a small screw in the bottom of the holder, into the wood. Been there for five years now and haven't lost a single bottle of Fat Tire yet.

I use these exact ones, one on windward and one on leeward so that when I tack I just grab my beer.....but after looking at the alcohol in boat thread....I might be putting myself too much on front street....even with coosies....

I also have two, and put beers in each one. When one runs dry, I tack.

Try bicycle water bottle holders.

Granted, it can be difficult to find a place where they will not foul a line.

However, when you find that place, they are secure, fit many containers, and can either be screwed to the glass, clamped to a staunchen or bimini tube, or screwed to a hatch board.

Can't imagine suction cups; take your time, figure out where you want something, and put it there to stay.

Get a suction cup made for power boats. Everything about powerboats pretty much suck. :D

Sorry if I'm stepping on anyone's toes out there, i'm just kidding.

I don't believe it

What's it been...three, maybe four months since I had to interject here? What a bunch of knuckleheads. You forgot "West Marine Suction Cup Sealant and Adhesive". The stuff only costs about $25 for a two ounce container, but it lasts a long time. And, it is completely removeable!
