• Sailing is all about the Weather.

Big into the exploration of Atlantic Hurricanes since Katrina came uninvited into his world, James (Jim) Gurley (JamesG161) has followed every Tropical Storm birthed in Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean waters since. Being a boater, he knows that we often need more time to prepare than we get from the TV weather folk. Jim relies on the science of storm development to share early warning info with friends and fellow boaters.

Early in 2018, Jim and John Shepard, (JSSailem) started to chat about the weather data available. John asked Jim to help forecast Pacific NW storms, and this morphed into discussions on weather forecasting.

For John, sailing in the PNW is sometimes hit and miss. One day is ugly, then a string of beautiful days but no wind, followed by a series of blue-sky days and 12 knot breezes. Being ready for those great sailing days means you need to look to the Pacific Ocean and what is brewing. John has been into Pacific NW Weather since the 1970’s when his first PNW November storm hit bringing more than 40 days and 40 nights of continual rain.

Together we want to share information, new APPs, safety, and thoughts about letting the weather help you. Identify some of the resources for sailors and help prepare you for your next sailboat outing.

It is far better to go out on the water knowing what to expect in weather terms, than to be out on the water and see dark ominous clouds suddenly appear, unprepared.

This a North Central Atlantic Storm. It has been brewing for days.
It doesn't look to threaten any land. The models have it hovering.

From my tracking of the remanent LOW pressure from Florence, the two LOWs in the Atlantic appear to be split offs.

and if...

The ECMF tracking models of Pressure fronts hold true...
The LOWs will recombined again in early October.

This is crazy Jim..

Leslie is Circling and taking punches from HIGH pressures. It will strengthen and subside all week.

Put it bluntly, if it was the year 1492, Christopher Columbus would not have discovered America crossing an Atlantic Ocean like this.
Very rare indeed.

The never ending Leslie. This storm continues to remove stored Solar Energy from the Atlantic.
Leslie only seem to wobble when pushed by a HIGH pressure system, but doesn't destroy it.

This huge Heat removal is shown in this Temperature Anomaly chart which is compare to a standard average temperature from 1980's-2000.
Do see the huge BLUE area sitting under Leslie?

Also the BLUE from West Africa to the Caribbean from previous 2018 storms. West Pacific is up to I names.

Noteworthy is the amount of SNOW and the lack of Equatorial Pacific Heat [No El Niño this year possibility]

After part of Florence joined Leslie it has been wobbling in Central Pacific since the start of this thread.
_______
Leslie will finally die this weekend as it hits Portugal and Spain.

Leslie probably removed more Solar Energy from the Atlantic than any other storm in modern history.

If it had delayed another 2 days, Micheal would have merged with Leslie.

The story of Leslie...
Leslie is not a very particular storm. Starts a dance in the Atlantic. Gets the weather guy excited. Starts to wander a bit gets confused. Muddles about in the Atlantic sucking up energy. Think maybe I can cause a ruckus. Meets up with Florence, a real party girl. Now focused on the Mediterranean as a play ground. There to blow out and rain on SW Europe. Only to miss the speed demon Michael racing across the Atlantic having heard there is a party. Who now seams destined miss the Med Tourists and ride the edge of the Gulf Stream towards France, Ireland and England to start off their winter with a bit of wet dreary.

Well I guess that is what happens when your born in the Tropics and head north.
