I own a 1991 Catalina 30 powered by a 25hp Universal Diesel. My transmission is stuck in forward gear. Im guessing that I may need to replace the cable . What else might it be? Also how big of a job is it? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Cable Replacement

First check the transmission linkage at the transmission itself. If you can manually change gears there, then it's probably the cable. If it is the cable, it's a tedious but not too difficult job. If you have Edson wheel steering (as I do), Edson has a good info sheet they can send you on the job. You first remove the old cable and measure it, then buy the replacement. If you want you can attach a trailer/feed line to the old cable as you remove it to assist in running the new cable, but I didn't find it necessary. You then run the new cable. Hardest part was accessing the bracket inside the pedestal that hold the cables in place; mine was so corroded that I had to ultimately pry it out and replace it (Edson part). All in all I spent a full day on the job -- would be less if you have no problems with that darn bracket; and I'm not the handiest guy around. Post back if you have pedestal steering and any other details of your problem and maybe we can diagnose further. Mike Turner S/V Amity Long Beach

Stuck in forward

It happened to me once. I had a extra jery can of fuel up against the cable. It bound and I was stuck in gear. All I did was get the can away from the cable. Maybe you have someting against the cable? Good luck.

Shift Cable

The first thing to check is that the cable sheath is attached to the back of the shifter. If it comes adrift it just moves back and forth with the cable inside and has no effect at the other end.

Thanks Gary...Brad & Mike for taking the time.

Mike... I think I have the same problem you had with the bracket or lever. It goes up against where the bolt goes through in the pedistal. I still need to get it all apart & then I'll know more. I took the compass out & a plastic piece of the compass was broke off the bottom & lying in the pedistal. That might explain the bubble in the compass? When I get down there again...I hope tomorrow, I'll get back to you. Again, I appreciated your help. Morrie C-30

Bracket

Morrie -- Hopefully your job will go easier than mine. The bracket was so old the bolt that went through the pedestal was frozen solid -- I would up having to drill it out. Not too technical but very tedious. The rest of the job was pretty easy. Keep us posted; feel free to email me direct at MTurner318@aol.com if I can be of more help. Also see the earlier post about checking to make sure the ends of the cable are securely attached -- that could be the problem. Mike Turner S/V Amity
