Stretched Stays

I just purchased a 1977 C-30. The boat is in great shape, but I can't seem to get enough rig tension. The Uppers are fine. The lower turnbuckles are maxed down and I still have pretty loose shrouds. There has been no buckling of the mast step, (not even crazing in the gelcoat. The only thing I can figure is the furler added length to the forestay and the mast is raked aft. Doesn't apper that way. Is this a common problem? What is the recommended rig tension? Is there a retro turnbuckle available or should I just replace the entire shrouds? Any advice is welcome. Thanks Tim

loos gage

If the headstay was lengthened you would have notice it most in the backstay. These masts are meant to be stright or in column(no rake). As for rig tension I bought a Loo's gage($35-$40)and followed the directions/rules of thumb that came with it. After I was sure the mast was stright in the boat, I tighten the shrouds to the range the Loo's gage recomended and no problems since. If you think the shrouds are streached, think about dropping the mast this winter when you haul and send the shrouds to a rigger to be checked. He can tell you if they need replacing. 77' an older boat and you should go thru the rig and check the spreaders and the tangs for wear. Here's a good site to help with your overhaul! Good luck!
